Fig. 1 Schematic model of clonal changes in hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) population with aging. The quantity of HSCs increase with age, but the clonal diversity likely decreases with development of myeloid bias. In age-associated clonal hematopoietic diseases such as pre-leukemic conditions of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs), aberrant HSC clones, which have accumulated disease-causing mutations, dominate the HSC population.
