Presentation transcript:

If you could be totally invisible for 24 hours and were completely assured that you would not be detected or held responsible for your actions, what would you do?

Social Influence process whereby the words or actions of other people directly or indirectly influence a person’s behavior

Social Norms Socially based rules that tell what people should not do in various situations. These are not verbalized, but are powerful enough that people follow automatically.

Norms…… Give a reasonable explanation to why we should not break these social norms:

Norms…… Talking to someone in another bathroom stall Facing the back of the elevator Answering the phone and waiting for the person to answer first.

Norms…… If you’re a man, shaking someone’s hand while smiling Singing out loud while walking to your next class. Say “I Love You” when ending conversation with a stranger.

Two Types of Norms Injunctive Norms Descriptive Norms behaviors which are perceived as being approved of by other people behaviors which are perceived as being approved of by other people

Deindividuation Loss of individual identity in presence of groups – Occurs in large groups – ex. Looting, rioting

Diffusion of Responsibility Causes of Deindividualization Diffusion of Responsibility Diminished Awareness shifting of attention away from internal thoughts & standards & toward the external environment. (ex. gang rapes) belief that one cannot be held personally accountable for one’s actions. (ex. KKK)
