Bell work 9/18/2017 GET YOUR COMP BOOK! Mineral Breakage Observe the picture below then decide if it shows fracture or cleavage. Cleavage

Let’s Review… Fracture or Cleavage?

Let’s Review… YES Does it have luster?

Density Streak Hardness Identifying Minerals Density Streak Hardness

Today’s Goals… Describe streak. Recognize the hardness of a mineral. Explain how streak and hardness can be used to identify an unknown mineral.

DENSITY… Density = mass/volume Density is how closely packed together atoms are in a given volume of space. Density is the amount of matter you have to fill in a specific space. When there is more matter in a given space, it is more dense. Density = mass/volume

Observe the DENSITY column below: Rubbing Alcohol Vegetable Oil Toy Block Water Maple Syrup Marble

What is streak? On your foldable… Streak is the color of the powder of a mineral.

What is hardness? On your foldable… Hardness is a measure of the ability of a mineral to resist scratching.

Hardness Test Lab: Try to scratch all four minerals with your fingernail. Try to scratch a penny using all four minerals. Try to scratch all four minerals with a nail.

Which picture below shows streak? D

Which is harder: Calcite or Topaz?
