Which nation spent the most on the war? The least? Why do you think certain nations spent more than others?

Peace is Made Section 12.5 1/16/13

At what cost should peace be reached? What about the war in Iraq? How did the US raise money for WWI? How did the US make sure people stayed loyal during WWI?

Paris Peace Conference European leaders met in Paris in 1919 Representatives from Britain, France, Italy Now that WWI was over, they needed to discuss what to do with Germany (the loser!)

The Big Four

President Wilson represented the U.S. 14 Points: his peace plan wanted reduction of military forces wanted self-determination (independence) for all nations League of Nations: organization in which world nations would work together for peace

League of Nations meeting

But, Wilson did not get everything he wanted The idea of self-determination for all nations was rejected Britain and France were angry and wanted to punish Germany for starting WWI

The Versailles Treaty Germany had to pay reparations to France and Britain Basically they had to pay $33 billion for damages caused by the war

Versailles Treaty

Many borders changed under this treaty New nations were created and other nations lost land This created tension and anger for many people

American Reaction Many Americans were against Versailles Treaty and League of Nations Thought it involved U.S. too much in world affairs Treaty was rejected and voted down by the Senate

Effects on U.S. European power decreased after the war U.S. was in a new position of world power, but remained isolated Soldiers were disillusioned by war; had trouble readjusting to life at home

Soldiers Return Home
