The Art of Collage

Media (art materials) used for collage include : Various types of paper Cloth Photos Drawings Other 2-dimensional media such as leather, buttons, leaves, etc.

Spanish 20th century artist, Pablo Picasso, was the father of many art movements including perhaps his most famous, Cubism. Collages were one of the many types of art Picasso created. Pablo Picasso

Collage Artist: Romare Bearden (1911-1988) He was born in Mecklenburg county and then moved to New York City. He created collages about the plight of African-Americans and Civil rights.

“One Night Stand”, 1974

“The Family”, 1975

Eric Carle Eric Carle’s art is distinctive and instantly recognizable. His art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and colorful images.

Your Collage Assignment Create an interesting, unique mosaic about a subject of your choosing. Keep your individual collage pieces no larger than the size of a quarter. Use a variety of shape and size (and color) to make your art more interesting Your collage can include some drawing -Could be textures, words, or enhancing a photo. Media choices: magazine photos, real photos, drawings, cloth, construction paper, newspaper, tissue paper, etc.

Instructions continued… Use scissors to cut the major shapes out. Cut precisely! If needed, you may use an x-acto knife and a board to cut tiny details. I prefer you tear the entire page out of the magazine. Don’t glue anything until you have a good idea of where you’re going with your project. When you’re ready to glue, be as neat as possible. You want your work to appear unified and complete. Every day, clean up all paper scraps on your table and on the floor. Recycle scrap paper. Return magazines neatly!

Some examples of what I’m looking for. THINK MOSAIC!
