Visual Arts Delmar School District Course Syllabus & Outline   Visual Arts (5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade) Contacting Teacher: Preparation Period: A-Day: 9:59-10:40, 2:15-2:56 B-Day: 8:30-9:11, 10:44-11:24 (302) 846-9544 x174 Lauren.Allen@delmar.k12.de.us Course Description As your child's Art Teacher, my goal is to create an environment within the classroom that promotes creative artistic growth through expressing, exploring and analyzing the applications of the visual arts.  And of course, to have fun during the process! Course Rationale/Objectives - Explore the basic processes of creating visual images using different art media. - Explore how art is created as a response to images, forms and experiences. - Become familiar with the language of art by acquiring a working vocabulary based on the elements and principles of art. - Communicate and express idea imaginatively through their art work. - Examine and evaluate artworks past and present. - Understand that art reflects, records, shapes and plays a role in every culture. - Apply the elements and principles of art in the production and evaluation of student artwork. Major Learning Goals/Standards *All Delmar Middle High School policies will be strictly enforced* Students are required to keep a daily journal/ sketchbook and folder, which will contain all notes, tests, quizzes, warm-ups, research and handouts. Students are expected to complete all projects and homework on the due date. Students are responsible for turning in all make-up assignments no later than 3 days after they return. Students will challenge themselves by doing their best work. No quitters will be tolerated. Students will listen carefully during discussions, demonstrations and follow the directions given. Students will show respect for the school, the faculty and all other students. Students will use all Art materials properly and safely. Students will maintain the art room by cleaning up thoroughly.

Homework/Sketchbook/ Learning Activities / Teaching Methods: To ensure that all of my students are learning and applying the skills and information of this class, I provide a number of ways to differentiate the instruction. Whether they have multiple visual aids to see exactly what they are working towards or working in collaborative pairs, every learner in this class will have the opportunity to be successful. It is my goal to make sure the students are learning the basic principles of their given assignment whether or not I have to alter the assignment to fit their needs and interest. Grading, Assessment, and Evaluation Procedures: Students will not be graded on their individual skill level. The efforts and completion of their work will be what determines their grade for each assignment. Each project will have a rubric to ensure that the student knows the expectations and requirements in order to receive their desired grade. Quizzes and tests will be given throughout the units to assess the mastery of a particular skill or subject. Class work, homework and participation will also be assessed on a daily record. The overall grading system for this course is: The grading system for a completed art project is:   Work Readiness 20 points Followed Directions Clean Up Skills Mastered Creativity Total = 100 points Projects 40% Homework/Sketchbook/ Class work 20% Tests/Quizzes Participation Total =100% Delmar Middle & High School Grading Scale

Materials provided by Teacher All materials necessary to complete a graded assignment will be provided for the student. However, with large number of students that use the materials on a day to day basis, it will greatly benefit each student to have their own set of the essential materials for individual success. Materials provided by Student Classroom materials are everyone’s materials! But please keep in mind there are a large number of students using the classroom’s share. I greatly recommend for each child to have their own set of materials that they can leave in my room strictly for art use. -Please clearly label all materials with student name. Composition Notebook or Sturdy Notebook to serve as Sketchbook Colored pencils Glue Sticks Markers Pencils Erasers Tinfoil Hand soap Fabric Pencil case -to hold materials (no plastic pencil boxes, please  ) Additional recommended materials: Scissors, Glue Bottle, Ruler, black permanent markers(Sharpies work well), old shirt or apron. ________________________________________________________________________ I am currently searching for extra materials that we would be able to use in the art room, many of which you may already have around your home! Any way in which you could contribute would make a HUGE difference to the student’s lives as they explore, learn, and grow through art. The following materials would be greatly appreciated, but certainly not required. Thank you! Toilet paper rolls Paper towel rolls Empty plastic containers such as: yogurt, sour cream etc. Tissues Hand sanitizer Old, broken, or abandoned crayons Paper Plates (Large and Small) Wax Paper Paper bags Empty Cereal/Cracker boxes Old calendar pictures Old magazines Assorted buttons, ribbons, string, yarn Etc.
