Jude Lesson 5: Behavior of False Teachers Rev. Christopher J. Respass Antioch Bible Institute Summer 2012

The Behavior of the False Prophets Recap of Jude 5-7 A. God has a history or bringing judgment upon those who do not truly believe: 1. Those destroyed after leaving Egypt (v.5). 2. Angels who rebelled (v.6). 3. Residents of Sodom & Gomorrah (and surrounding cities) (v.7).

The Behavior of the False Prophets The “Creeps” behave in ungodly ways (v.8-10). A. Have not trusted in God, but followed the way of classic unbelievers before them. 1. Rely on their dreams and not the word. a) God speaks through dreams (Num. 12:6, Jer. 23:28). b) The dream must align with God’s word (Deut. 13:1-5).

The Behavior of the False Prophets 2. Defile the Flesh—sexually immoral and possibly practicing homosexuality. Q: how many church leaders have known, ongoing inappropriate, sexual relationships yet they are never disciplined?

The Behavior of the False Prophets 3. Reject Authority—don’t recognize spiritual leadership and specifically repudiate (or refuse to accept) Jesus’ authority over their lives. 4. Blaspheme the “glorious ones” in animalistic ignorance (v.8-10). a) Slander celestial beings b) Archangel Michael didn’t pronounce judgment on Satan, he left that to God.

The Behavior of the False Prophets III. False Teachers behave as notorious sinners of old (v.11). A. “Way of Cain”—of the evil one, murdered his brother, and lived by a faithless, self-proclaimed religion (Gen. 4:2-5; Heb. 11:4). B. “Balaam’s Error”—Consumed by the love of money and filthy gain, they lead God’s people astray (see, Num. 22:7-21).

The Behavior of the False Prophets C. “Korah’s Rebellion”—will certainly be destroyed by God (Num. 16:1-35). Jude speaks “woe” upon the false teachers because their judgment is coming.

The Behavior of the False Prophets The False Teachers’ True Nature (v.12-13). 1. “blemishes” or “hidden reefs”—defilements or hidden dangers. 2. Shepherds feeding themselves (Ezek. 34:2, 7-10). 3. Waterless clouds, blown away—they look promising, but offer no refreshment.

The Behavior of the False Prophets 4. Fruitless trees in autumn—twice dead. a) long past harvest, but no fruit b) uprooted and destroyed 5. Wild waves of the sea—busy, restless, untamed, stirring up scum like the foam of the sea. 6. Wandering stars—providing no navigational guidance.

The Behavior of the False Prophets Their end is…..
