What is a Spy? Definition

Definition of a spy An agent employed by a state to obtain secret information, especially of a military nature, concerning its potential or actual enemies. One employed by a company to obtain confidential information about its competitors. One who secretly keeps watch on another or others.

Duties of a Spy Gather intel on an enemy Break Codes Sabotage equipment Will pretend to be on one side and really be on another Give misinformation to their enemies Dress normally to trick their enemies Worked by themselves Would not give out info if they were caught

Cold War Spy Gear

Silenced Guns Worked by suppressing the gases that leave a gun barrel when fired Special ammunition is used, travels slower then normal bullets Not entirely silent but is mainly used when in a crowded area or from far away Because of the slower bullets, mostly effective at close range

Keychain Gun 1 inch long, 3 inches wide Designed to fire gas cylinders Also can fire 32 caliber bullet Very easily concealable Described as a “last resort” weapon Have a great amount of recoil because of the small size Used at close range, very inaccurate

Cigarette Case Weapons Used by a KGB assassin Nikolai Khokhlov Fired hollow point bullets with poison inside Fired through the fake cigarettes in the case when opened

United States Spies in the Cold War Why Were Spies Used? Lockheed U-2

Why Were They Used? To give the Soviet Union False Information To gain knowledge on what the Soviet Union was doing Mainly involved finding information for what nuclear technology the Soviets had and were developing Nuclear submarine technology was also a reason why they were used

C.I.A. “Central Intelligence Agency” Was evolved in the Cold War time period Established to do covert operations Worked with the military to form the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) So they could operate the air craft like the Lockheed U-2 and later satellites Main group involved in the spying

Lockheed U-2 Known as the “Dragon Lady” Provided day and night, very high altitude, all weather surveillance Wasn’t detectable The aircraft is also used for electronic sensor research and development, satellite calibration, and satellite data validation. Was a main device the C.I.A. used to find info on the Soviets

Soviet Spies in the Cold War Why Spies Were Used

Why Spies Were Used Mainly for the same reasons United States Spies were used. Nuclear technology info was the main info trying to be obtained More effort was put on the use of Soviet spies then the Americans

KGB Was the national security agency of the Soviet Union It was very difficult for them to build up after the second red scare ( anticommunism period) and with McCarthyism They recruited mercenary agents and this was very successful with scientific and technical espionage
