Presentation transcript:

Aim: To look at cooperative learning i.e. group work! Outcomes: Identify difference between traditional teacher and cooperative learning. Introduce some Kagan structures e.g. rally robin

Look familiar?

Situation 1: A teacher tells students, "Here is a worksheet with twenty problems on it. Work alone and turn it in when you are finished." Situation 2: A teacher tells students, "Here is a worksheet with twenty problems on it. Use RallyCoach with your partner and turn it in when you are both sure all the answers are correct."

Benefits Consistency: Use the same names, so pupils will know ‘Rally Robin’, ‘Quiz quiz trade’, ‘think time’. Interaction- social skills Community- peer and self assessment Cooperative learning Fun!!

PIES Positive Independence Individual Accountability Equal participation Simultaneous Interaction

Quiet Signal Quiet corner Raise hand Focus on teacher Signal others Quiet corner/silly hat/silly glasses. Time for you to talk. Time for me to talk. Homework hat/horn. Holding a hand up. Count down.

Forming pairs Do exactly what it says on the tin! ‘Mix, pair, share’ ‘stand up, hands up, pair up’ Do exactly what it says on the tin!

Rally Robin Discuss the number 81

Rally Robin Pair Pupils ‘stand up, hands up, pair up’ or ‘mix, pair, share’ Inform pupils that the next activity is Rally Robin. Explain Rally Robin Give a question with multiple responses, think time. Then after think time tell them who is going first. Pupils share answers till time is up.

Timed Pair Share

Timed Pair Share Announce a topic and state how long each pupil will have to ‘share’. Provide ‘think time’ Then who goes first. First person shares, other listens and then responds. Switch roles.

Responses Encourage by example pupils saying Thank you for sharing that. That was interesting because… One thing I learned when listening to you was… I enjoyed listening to that because….

Quiz quiz trade Stand up, hands up, pair up Partner A quizzes Partner B answers Partner A responds or coaches Switch roles Partners trade cards and move on. Repeat steps 1-6
