Marita’s Bargain Chasing Success

Opening Activity Objective: Students will examine two texts in order to practice close reading and annotation strategies. Warm Up: What role does school play in your success? think about how your life may be altered without access to school. Essential Question: Does active or passive reading lead to better reading comprehension? Explain. Week 2 Day 3

What is Central Idea? CENTRAL IDEA = MAIN IDEA. These terms mean the same thing. The central idea of a passage is the message that the author is trying to get across to the reader. The central idea is not the topic. A central idea is stated in a sentence, not just one to two words. Central idea most commonly refers to informational texts. Theme is for fiction

Finding Central/Main Idea To find the main idea of a paragraph or passage, ask yourself this question: What is the most important point the author wants me to understand about the topic?

While Reading Read “Marita’s Bargain”. As you read, identify and record the main idea in each section of the essay. What “bigger” or broader ideas about education do the points from each section develop? Cite evidence from the text to support your response. Distribute graphic organizer

Turn and Talk Are KIPP students different from other public school students? With a partner, discuss the qualities that KIPP students possess and how their circumstances distinguish them from other students. Cite evidence to support your views. Exit ticket – post thoughts to socrative

Day 2 Marita’s Bargain

Warm Up Read the definition of the word motley on page 4. Reread lines 35-45 Why is the use of the word motley to describe the students crucial to understanding Gladwell’s point in this sentence.

Introductory Activity Reread the second paragraph of the essay. Why does Gladwell choose to write out this data rather than insert a table or chart? Submit your response in padlet http://padlet.com/markea_kelly/3xs1dhu9ek04

Determine Central Ideas Choose two other people to work with. Reread your assigned lines from “Marita’s Bargain”. Use your ebook annotation tools to determine the central ideas of the essay as follows: Highlight in pink significant details or observations that Gladwell makes in your section On a note, explain what the details reveal about his main idea in that part of the text Have students present Gladwell’s central ideas from each major point of each section. There will probably be two groups for each passage. It will be interesting to see if their observations differ.

Individual Activity Answer questions 1-8 on page 16 Finish for homework if you run out of time

Warm Up Read the definition of desultory on page 14 Explain why Gladwell would not consider private or parochial schools to be desultory. Parochial – of, relating to, or financially supported by one or more church parishes.

Exit Ticket Which central idea in the essay do you find the most compelling? Please include details from the text to support your response.

Day 3 Marita’s Bargain

Initial ideas form text Key Terms Student ideas Initial ideas form text Reined ideas from text Writers of informational texts use key terms to develop their ideas. Some key terms, such as “American Dream,” represent broad concepts. Others, such as “charter school,” belong to specific domain. It is important to analyze how the author defines key terms (18a).

Collaborative Discussion Use the inverted pyramid chart to analyze the concept of “public school” in the essay. What public school has meant at different periods in history and parts of the world? Complete the first two tiers and leave the bottom tier blank. http://freeology.com/wp-content/files/invertedpyramid.pdf
