Jesus – the Shepherd The Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14) The Great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20) The Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4) Psalm 22 The Lament of the Dying Shepherd The Travails and Triumphs of Christ at the Cross

What was Jesus thinking about? He thought about others… The daughters of Jerusalem (Luke 23:28-31) The soldiers and crowd (Luke 23:34) The dying thief (Luke 23:43) His mother (John 19:26) His beloved friend, John (John 19:27)

What was Jesus thinking about? He thought about the Scriptures… The cry of Matthew 27:46 (see also Mark 15:34) is a direct quote of Psalm 22:1 “to fulfill Scripture” (John 19:28) – linked to Psalm 69:21; related to Psalm 22 “It is finished!” (John 19:30) – Psalm 22:31 can rightly be translated, “It is finished!”

Psalm 22 The travails of the Savior (22:1-21) Jesus was forsaken by God (22:1) Jesus’ cries went unanswered (22:2) Jesus was despised and scorned(22:6-8) Jesus was tormented by ferocious men(22:12-13, 16) Jesus endured the horrific physical and emotional agony of death by crucifixion (22:14‑18)

The Crucifixion “I am poured out like water…” (14) “And all my bones out of joint…” (14) “My heart turned to wax and melted…” (14) “My strength dried up like a potsherd, tongue sticks to roof of mouth” (15) “And you lay me in the dust of death…” (15) “surrounded by evil men” (16) “pierced my hands and feet…” (16) “I can count all my bones…” (17) “They look, they stare at me…” (17) “They divide my garments and cast lots for my clothing…” (18)

How should you respond? Remember the greatness of your sin as well as the greatness of your Savior’s love. Romans 5:8 Ephesians 2:4-5

Isaac Watts “Would He devote that sacred head for such a one as I?” “Would He devote that sacred head for a sinner such as I?” More modern renderings of the hymn text “Would He devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?” Watt’s original text

Charles Spurgeon “He who has stood before his God, convicted and condemned, with the rope about his neck, is the man to weep for joy when he is pardoned, to hate the evil which has been forgiven him, and to live to the honor of the Redeemer by whose blood he has been cleansed”

How should you respond? We need to trust and submit ourselves to Him who ordains suffering to come into our lives. 1 Peter 4:19 Hebrews 5:18

How should you respond? We need to trust God even when our prayers go unanswered.

Psalm 22 The triumphs of the Savior (22:22-31) Fellowship with God (22:22a) Praise to God (22:22b-23) Testimony about God (22:24) Thank-offering to God (22:25-26) Successful Evangelism (22:27, 30-31) Kingdom Rule (22:27-28)

And Can It Be? And can it be that I should gain Charles Wesley And can it be that I should gain An interest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? ‘Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me!
