Religion and Community cohesion Religion and Life

The UK as a multi-faith society and the issues it raises L.O: To know what is meant by a multi-faith society. To look at the issues raised by living in a multi-faith society.

Keywords Multi-faith society - many different religions living together in one society. Religious freedom - the right to practise your religion and change your religion. Religious pluralism - accepting all religions as having an equal right to coexist. Interfaith marriage - marriage where the husband and wife are from different religions.

Watch and make notes: A multi-faith society is one where there are many different religions. Watch and make notes: How many religions can you name that are practiced in the UK? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCAG-xPoWrc

The UK AS a multi-faith society The UK has become more of a multi-ethnic society which had lead to us becoming a multi-faith society. The UK accepts that all religions should have equal rights within the UK (religious pluralism). All religious people have religious freedom where they are allowed to practise their faith. It is illegal within the UK to discriminate against anyone based on their faith because of the Equality Act 2010. The 2010 census showed 71% of the UK are Christian. 4% said they were Muslim and 21% said they were not religious.

Knowledge check 1. What is a multi-faith society? 2. Is the UK a multi-faith society? 3. Name five faiths found in the UK.

What are the benefits of living in a multi-faith society? People can freely worship how they want. No one faith is in ‘control’. Experience of other faiths reduces conflict. In a multi-faith society people can experience other faiths first hand. Experience of other faiths can add to a persons faith. People may be challenged to think deeply about their faith. The media reflects the multi-faith society and this reduces prejudice.

Can you rank order the benefits with the most beneficial being number 1 and the least beneficial being number 7? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
