Spot the hazard in the home How good are you at spotting hazards in the home? Play the game to see how you get on! Students will start being allowed to stay at home by themselves so it is important they know how to stay safe. Follow the link to play the game. Ask for student volunteers to come up and control the mouse on each round. Note – you will need to make sure your Adobe Flash player is up to date to play the game so check this before the lesson. The Genius bar can help you if this is a problem. Briefly discuss why each object clicked did or did not present a hazard. Ask how each risk can be dealt with safely. Reinforce the message that spotting hazards and risks helps us to avoid danger and keeps us safe. Mention also that we need to be very careful near hazards (e.g. putting away sharp knives, switching off heaters and moving a hot drink). Children should get adult help whenever possible. http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Teaching-resources/Teaching-packages/Microsite/Life-Live-it-first-aid-education-for-children/Stay-safe/Activity-spot-danger
Health and Safety Inspector What are some of the risks and hazards young people face everyday? Ask students to identify some of the risks they might face day to day. Spend time discussing sensible behaviour when cycling to and from school particularly in large groups, using their phone crossing the road and being aware of traffic, being home alone e.g. cooking and making sure the handle is away from the edge and pans go on the back hob.

Hot Chocolate You’ve become experts in identifying potential risks and hazards but it is still important to know how to respond if an accident does happen. If someone has a burn… Look out for the hot thing. Put the injury under cold running water. Keep the injury under cold water for at least ten minutes. Tell an adult or call 999. Watch the Red Cross clips called Hot Chocolate on how to respond to a minor burn – (apologies- the acting isn’t Oscar worthy but it does the job well enough!). http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Teaching-resources/Teaching-packages/Microsite/Life-Live-it-first-aid-education-for-children/Stay-safe/Hot-chocolate-part1 http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Teaching-resources/Teaching-packages/Microsite/Life-Live-it-first-aid-education-for-children/Help-save-lives/Hot-chocolate-part2 http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Teaching-resources/Teaching-packages/Microsite/Life-Live-it-first-aid-education-for-children/Emergency-action/Hot-chocolate-part3

Before you go… Remember, as long as you are being sensible and aware of the risks around you there is no need for you not to go out and have fun – just be responsible! Show the clip from the Big Bang Theory where Sheldon refuses to leave his room because he is afraid of the dangers in the outside world. End by reminding students that this lesson is not about them not going out and having fun but about being aware and responsible when they do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bIoeBpSeU4
