Step 1: Planning before writing Identify the scope of your manuscript. Link your research to the ongoing conversation. Target the journal. Determine whether to co-author your article.
Step 2: Writing process IMRaD structure
Title It must be concise It includes theoretical issues It must be helpful for reference purposes in databases Author's name (Byline). Institutional affiliation Institution or city and state of residence

Introduction Introduces study, narrowing the general topics quickly to your specific problem and strategy to address the problem. Reviews relevant literature on constructs, especially presenting the state of the art (which identifies the “gap” in our knowledge the study fills). Concludes by explaining how the study will advance or fill the gap in our existing knowledge. Taken from: Anderson, C. E. (2016). Empirical papers [PowerPoint slides]. Department of Foreign Language and Cultures, Universidad de La Sabana, Chía. Colombia.
Method Basic rules: Enough information that reader could reproduce what you did. Only describe things unique to your study; standard generic information. Structure/Content: Context/Participants. Data collection instruments. Identify/justify (but do not provide generic information). Intervention (perhaps use 1-page timeline/chart.) Data analysis methods (again: identify and cite, but do not describe, standard processes) Taken from: Anderson, C. E. (2016). Empirical papers [PowerPoint slides]. Department of Foreign Language and Cultures, Universidad de La Sabana, Chía. Colombia.
Results This section presents the results of the analysis. The data analysis methods used to perform the analysis are presented in the Methods section. Assemble your results in a logical order to make a “story”. (The order in which results are presented should lead the reader towards your eventual interpretation.) Include samples/excerpts of data that support/illustrate your findings. Taken from: Anderson, C. E. (2016). Empirical papers [PowerPoint slides]. Department of Foreign Language and Cultures, Universidad de La Sabana, Chía. Colombia.
Discussion Remind reader of your study’s objectives and the reasons you chose them. main findings Compare your findings with those of previous studies. Explain the significance of your findings. Identify limitations and suggest future research to address them and/or to answer remaining/new questions. End with a concluding paragraph that (again!): Identifies the study’s rationale and objectives. Summarized main findings. Emphasizes the significance of the findings. Taken from: Anderson, C. E. (2016). Empirical papers [PowerPoint slides]. Department of Foreign Language and Cultures, Universidad de La Sabana, Chía. Colombia.
Step 3: Reviewing process Acceptance The manuscript needs revision and resubmission Pending revisions Rejection Revise all the comments provided by the editor. Possible reasons for rejection: “Insufficient advanced in knowledge” Analysis procedures. Unjustifiable conclusions Klingner, J. K., Scanlon, D., & Pressley, M. (2005). Task: Research article analytical reading What problem does the research address? What is the existing gap this research aimed at filling? Does the article discuss the method? Is the methodology used appropriate for the research? How do you know that? What instruments were used? What are the specific findings? Please, list them. Are the findings supported by evidence? How? How are the findings unique/new or supportive of other work in the field? Is the research related to any work you are dealing with now? Are there any further research areas mention in the article? Which ones?
