Biotechnology in North Carolina January 3, 2017

What is biotechnology? Use of living organisms to solve problems and make useful products Ex. More productive crops Ex. Better livestock Ex. Bacterial cells used to make insulin

Are we using biotechnology now? Yes, North Carolina is a leader in the world in biotechnology. Used to Heal injured people, feed growing populations, and help sustain the natural resources we already have. http://vimeo.com/17125052

How does it work? Many different ways: Crossbreeding and selective breeding – makes crops better by choosing the best traits to breed. Genetic modification – changing the genetic material of a living organism. DNA fingerprinting – used to exclude individuals from lists of suspects. Animal cloning – producing the exact copy of individuals Bioremediation – using certain altered types of bacteria to clean up environment.

So, is it right to alter organisms for our benefit? HUGE ETHICAL QUESTION What is ethics? – that branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions.

So, are there jobs in Biotechnology? Yes!!! Biotech Jobs Many do NOT require a 4 year degree, a specialized 2 year degree is often desired.
