By Kristine C, Tarika S, and Shama J. The Guide- Chapter 8 By Kristine C, Tarika S, and Shama J.

Dominant Effect Narayan uses an authoritative tone when characters interact to emphasize Raju’s transition from a boy to an adult.

Initial Characterization of Raju “‘Do you think it is a laughing matter? Do you think I have come to amuse you?’” “What, sir, you laugh when I say I want money, you smile as if you were dreaming. Are you in this world or in paradise?” (126)

“I outlined to him a plan to utilize Rosie’s services and make money “I outlined to him a plan to utilize Rosie’s services and make money. The thought of her warmed me up. ‘She is a gold mine!’” Raju’s selfishness and greed

Rosie = gold mine

Uncle’s Visit -> Raju’s shift “Are you of our caste? No. You should not walk into a house like this and stay on. Did anyone invite you? No” (133) Attacking Rosie Uncle juxtaposes Raju’s shifting views

Rosie gives Raju courage to be independent #confidence #swag #ayegurl “My guidance was enough. She accepted it in absolutely unquestioning faith and ignored everything else completely. It gave me a tremendous confidence in myself and seemed to enhance my own dimensions” (132) Rosie gives Raju courage to be independent

“But you are not leaving “But you are not leaving. Others who don’t like the arrangement are welcome to leave” (134) Raju continues to support Rosie Reveals devotion

“I flew at my uncle…, shouting, ‘Get out of this house.’” (133) “‘Mother, she [Rosie] is not going anywhere’” (135) Raju stands up to his family and elders Confidence in himself; committed to own ideas

Final Characterization of Raju “I too felt changed; I had ceased to be the old Railway Raju and I earnestly wished that I too could bury myself, as Rosie had done, under a new name” (139) Raju’s shift to independence Traditional → modern

Discussion Questions What important Indian cultural values are brought up in this chapter? In what ways does Narayan do this? How is the idea of social standards/reputation included in this chapter and in Pride and Prejudice? Does Raju really admire Rosie, or does he mistake his greed for love? How does Narayan characterize Raju’s uncle? What role does he play? Compare and contrast the family dynamics shown in this chapter and in To the Lighthouse (ex: Raju/uncle; James/Mr. Ramsay).
