Components of perfect resume? Perfect resumes don't exist, but winning resumes do. Employers don't care how fancy; they want to see you can do their job (be their solution) Notes from Libby Dunn’s presentation @ Mount Olivet’s Career & Calling Summer Job Club on August 16, 2017 Have your resume work for you vs. trying to fit a mold or template. Many of us have received negative feedback on resumes. What one person values, another person disagrees with. Don’t obsess over creating the perfect resume. Develop a resume that shows you are the solution to the company’s pain point. How are your skills and experiences a perfect fit for the organization’s needs?

Components of perfect resume? It is your first impression; put your best foot forward on the page(s) to win the interview. 1 or 2 pages Clear, career- focused White space No typos (spelling, tense, etc.) Focus on the last 10-15 years of your career. Focus on the most relevant skills and experiences relating to the job for which you are applying. Adapt as needed for other positions. Make it easy to read, with a balance of text and white space. Have several people proof your resume for typos.

Components of perfect resume? Formats: chronological, functional/combo Quantifies and qualifies your accomplishments Geared towards the job you are applying to; use key words A resume is ever-changing; make your resume easy to edit! See following slides for info on various formats Quantifying and qualifying your accomplishments is vital. This is what recruiters/resume readers pay attention to. Use numbers, percentages, and concrete statistics to validate your accomplishments. Use key words to help your resume stand out with automated tracking systems that review resumes. Not sure about key words? Copy and past the job description and create a Wordle – it takes the most frequent words and makes them larger. http://www.wordle.net/create Avoid templates or graphics that can be tricky to edit with each permutation of your resume. You will be editing and tailoring your resume often; keep it simple!

Capital “F” Load your most powerful information in the Capital “F” zone where recruiters’ eyes tend to spend the most time. Other tips and insights: The Objective section is going by the wayside. Professional Summary or Profile is more frequent (and requires less tailoring for different jobs). Cover letters and thank you notes help you stand out. They can be tie-breakers between your great resume and someone else’s. Email or handwritten thank you? Depends on the situation. Email a thank you after a phone interview. Hand write a thank you after a face-to-face interview. But always write a thank you! Not optional! Keep your job search documents on file. Use a file for each company, with your resume, cover letter, interview notes, etc. Include your LinkedIn account. Don’t put “See references” or “References available upon request” on your resume. It’s understood, and it takes up precious space. Don’t bother with a resume writing service, which only gets you one resume. At the end of the day, the resume is only one tool in the job search. Networking has to go with it. Reach out to the hiring manager for the job, who has more weight than the recruiter.
