¿Reconocen otras palabras (words) en español? ¿Qué es un cognado (cognate)? A cognate is a word that has the same origin as an English word and approximately the same meaning. Many Spanish cognates are spelled almost exactly as their English relatives (unión, península, oficial, América). Other cognates just differ in spelling a little more (Estados Unidos, habitantes, nativos, lengua, población, constitución, obligatorio). In most cases, however, the Spanish pronunciation will be quite different from English.

¿Saben(do you know) saludar (say hello) en español?

¿Saben los números?

¿Why learn Spanish? For most people, Spanish is the easiest foreign language to learn because it uses the same alphabet as the English, with small exceptions. Most letters have only one sound, making it easy to “sound out” a word. In addition, approximately 50% of the words used in beginning Spanish are cognates; they look similar to the English word. Therefore, Spanish is widely offered in all schools around the country. Many country names are also cognates.

WHY LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE? Globalization is driving the need for foreign languages. The United Nations declared in 2008 the need for implementing language education as part of the curriculum so that young people are prepared for the linguistic and cultural differences they will encounter in their future interactions as they venture out into the world. Not to mention how the process of acquiring a foreign language can help reinforce your child’s academic skills, organizational skills, learning techniques and of course listening/speaking/reading/writing skills. Many country names are also cognates.

Do you know any of the Spanish speaking countries?

TAREA Homework will be done in a single paper with similar heading as Cornell notes. Answer these questions: Read and sign the contract. How do you answer when someone says, ¿cómo se llama? What is the most importante aspect about our class organization? Write down some reason why learing Spanish can be beneficial.

RETROALIMENTACION What was the hardest and the easiest part of the class? Tell me one thing you learn today? Do you have any questions? Nos vemos (see you) mañana…

¡Excelente trabajo!
