Presentation transcript:

Anterior dislocation of the knee with rupture of ligaments Anterior dislocation of the knee with rupture of ligaments. This 22-year-old man was injured when he was thrown from a horse he was trying to saddlebreak and the horse fell on him. (A) Lateral view of the knee shows the anterior displacement of the tibia in relation to the distal femur. (B) Lateral film made after reduction demonstrates normal articulating relationships and absence of any fractures. Note the great amount of capsular effusion and soft tissue swelling. (C) Although the patient did not sustain any fractures, he did rupture several ligaments. This AP film demonstrates the hardware used to surgically fixate and reconstruct the attachments of the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, and lateral collateral ligament. This patient was fortunate in that he escaped neurovascular injury during the initial accident. About half of all knee dislocations involve some degree of damage to the popliteal artery or peroneal nerve.
