America’s Empire 3 Reasons for American Imperialism Desire for military strength Trading opportunities Belief in cultural superiority

Beginnings of Imperialism US builds a modern navy to compete with Britain Ships made of steel Alaska bought from Russians for $7.2 million Hawaii 1898 Congress made Hawaii US territory Hawaiians never got a chance to vote for it

U.S.S. Maine USS Maine ordered to Cuba, to protect US lives, property. Cuba was in revolt over Spanish rule 300,000 Cubans put in concentration camps Feb. 1898 USS Maine explodes: 260 US sailors killed. No proof as to how the ship exploded Americans blame Spain.

Yellow Journalism US newspapers wanted revenge against Spain Tried to stir up emotions and anger people Yellow journalism = newspapers or media who exaggerate or lie solely for more readers/sales Hearst and Pulitzer competed against one another for stories to sell papers Focused on Spanish cruelty in Cuba Stories convinced America that Cubans needed help April 1898 War declared on Spain

Fighting US was able to take over Philippines with help from local Filipino’s US Navy blockades Cuba from Spanish Unlike navy, US army is small and unprepared Many are volunteers Poorly supplied

“Rough Riders” Teddy Roosevelt leads volunteer cavalry T.R. became a national hero Spanish fleet tries to escape blockade Is totally destroyed by the US Navy US troops invade Puerto Rico soon after War is over, US wins

Treaty of Paris: Spain and US agree to: Spain frees Cuba, gives Puerto Rico and Guam to US Sells Philippines to US for $20 million Growing movement of Americans who thought it wrong to control territory overseas.

Aftermath of SPAM (Spanish-American War) Cuba ruled by US military gov’t until they wrote Constitution Platt Amendment- US to intervene in Cuba if necessary, Cubans forced to add to their constitution 1917- Puerto Ricans made US citizens US territory still today

US and China US saw China as a great trading opportunity US gov’t issues Open Door notes Asks Euro nations to share trading rights with China Boxer Rebellion Chinese nationals kill foreigners in China Rebellion put down by US and Euro’s US gains trading rights to China

Open Door Policy US depends on trade to grow its economy. US will use force, if needed, to keep trade open. Open Door Policy drives US diplomacy in the 1900s.
