Question – How does context affect personal talk? Key words – accent dialect Standard English

Understanding context… Context shapes the way you talk Think about why people speak differently. How many social influences can you think of? E.g. gender

What’s your impression? Read the following and discuss the social influences on each speaker. My goodness. You are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my life. I would like you to join me in partaking in some luncheon. Listen fam, you’re peng! I wanna link her! Gawdon Bennet! She's pre'y. I wan' ter take 'er fer dinner. OK? She’s some yock, I wouldn’t mind shifting her.

Stereotypes You have all made stereotypes based on someone’s accent or dialect. What is a stereotype? How do you stereotype people and why do you do this? To what extent do you think it is possible for someone not to stereotype?

Accent and dialect Accent – this is the way words are pronounced based on where you come from (geographical region) Dialect – this is how grammar and word choice varies depending on your geographical region and social group. Standard English – this is the form of English that is accepted as the norm. It is seen as the ‘proper’ form of English Describe your accent and dialect. I will model an example using my accent and dialect.
