What is the Third Grade Guarantee? Identify students in grades kindergarten through grade 3 that are behind in reading Requires school districts to identify students struggling in reading and provide intervention to address all deficits in reading Create strong partnerships with all students’ families so that all students will be fluent readers and prepared for their futures

Identifying Struggling Readers at BCIS All students are screened in reading using Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP). Students that score below a 179 on MAP are given a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan (RIMP). They are considered off- track in reading. The Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan (RIMP) identify the needs of each student in the area of reading and the interventions that will be provided to that student. Progress is monitored throughout the year using data from MAP tests, reading benchmarks, and STAR reading (Accelerated Reading).

Reading Interventions Provided at BCIS Compass Learning Reading-using an online reading program that has individualized learning path for students based on their MAP scores Small group reading instruction with classroom teacher Small group reading instruction with a reading specialist 90 minutes of daily reading instruction-small group and whole group instruction

State English Language Test (ELA) Administered in the fall and spring to all third grade students Passing score on state test is required for promotion to fourth grade Alternate assessment available to students that do not pass the state ELA test State ELA testing is online using computers. The state ELA test measures all content that will be covered during the third grade year.

What happens if my child does not pass the test in the fall? Any student no passing the fall test will have an opportunity to take an alternate test-MAP or IOWA is utilized at Bloom-Carroll. If they were not on a RIMP at the beginning of the year, we will put them on a Reading Improvement Monitoring Plan to address any reading deficits. In order to be promoted to grade 4, a student must pass the state ELA test or an alternate test and receive passing grades on their report card. Any student not passing the state ELA or alternate tests will have the opportunity to participate in summer school. There will be two opportunities to test in the summer.
