3rd Grade Math Oglethorpe County Georgia Students have many opportunities to show their PRIDE (Prepared, Respectful, Involved, Dependable, and Encouraging) throughout the school on a daily basis. Students who show PRIDE will be rewarded with Patriot bucks which can be redeemed for various rewards, entrance to special school events, and attendance at PRIDE on Fridays (see below for details). Each week, students start with 10 Patriot bucks on their debit cards (students are required to keep these cards in their badge and wear them during the school day). When students engage in behaviors that do not represent school PRIDE, Patriot bucks will be deducted from their cards. In your child’s agenda, you will find a daily record of how many Patriot bucks your child finished each day with. When a student loses a Patriot buck, you will know they have had a problem following one of the components of PRIDE at OCES. Behavior incidents will be classified according to the components of PRIDE.

Why are Milestones Scores Important? Milestones are a part of our state’s retention and promotion policy In 3rd grade students must get a reading status of on grade level or above to be promoted to 4th grade. In 5th grade students must get a reading status of on grade level or above and score at Level 2, 3, or 4 in Math to be promoted to 6th grade. The state plans to add Science as a requirement for 5th grade in the future.
What are we doing to increase scores? Schedule changes allow for 135 minutes daily for ELA instruction (increase from 90 minutes last year) ELA teachers will use the Bookworms curriculum which provides differentiation, shared, and independent reading daily Math teachers will implement problem solving techniques from Cognitively Guided Instruction showing students multiple strategies for solving word problems
How will we track student growth? Students will participate in the Scholastic Reading Inventory three times a year which tracks students growth in Lexiles which provides a guide as to what grade level text is appropriate for individual students Reading Fluency will also be monitored which allows us to measure the speed and accuracy of reading Students will use the Reflex Math program to improve fluency on their basic facts. Write Score assessment will be administered 3 times a year to measure and improve writing skills.
