Funding the Lifecycle of Research Infrastructures José Antão*, Gloria Villar† National Contact Points (NCP) for the H2020 Research Infrastructures Programme *FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia † ISCIII – Instituto de Salud Carlos III The 4-year RICH Project (no. 646713) is supported by DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission under the Research Infrastructures Programme of the H2020 Framework Programme.

What are Research Infrastructures? Research infrastructures are facilities, resources and services that are used by the research communities to conduct research and foster innovation. Could be "single sited", "distributed" or "virtual" Major scientific equipments Knowledge-based resources e-infrastructures

Coordinated European planning – Why? To open access to existing RIs located in individual MS to European researchers To avoid duplication of effort and to coordinate and rationalise the use of these RIs To trigger the exchange of best practice, develop interoperability of facilities and resources, develop the training of the next generation of researchers

How are Research Infrastructures planned? Your country’s National Roadmap Find it online Find it online

Why do we need to combine funds? > 95% of the budget required to build and operate ESFRI Infrastructures is unaccounted for by H2020 Research Infrastructures INFRADEV calls Scientific Excellence

ESFRI/H2020 – Early; Member States/Regions – Core Securing financial support for the Implementation and Operation stages of the Lifecycle is an essencial part of the Design of a Research Infrastructure Member States and Regions (RIS3, National Roadmaps) Industry / Economic Activities of Research Infrastructures H2020 support for early operation (limited) Source: GSO Progress Report 2015

Practical Example – EU SOLARIS Research Infrastructures should be consistent with RIS3 – Involvement of regional political bodies; Not all regions benefit equally from Structural Funds – Variable geometries might require central authorities to harmonize; It’s difficult already within 1 country…
