Apply the Distributive Property

Lesson Essential Question How do you use the distributive property to simplify expressions?

Terminology Equivalent expressions – two expressions that have the same value for all values of the variable Distributive Property – Term – the parts of an expression that are added together Coefficient – the number part of a term with a variable part Constant Term – a number part but no variable part Like Terms - the parts of an expression that are added together

Ex 1: Apply the Distributive Property Use the distributive property to write an equivalent expression. 1) 4(y + 3) 2) (y + 7)y 3) n(n – 9) 4) (2 – n)8

Ex 2: Distribute a negative number Use the distributive property to write an equivalent expression. 1) -2(x + 7) 2) (5 – y)(-3y) 3) –(2x – 11) 4) (y – 2)(-4) 5) -5x(4 – x) 6) –(3y – 8)

Ex 3: Identify parts of an expression Identify the terms, like terms, coefficients, and constant terms of the expressions. 1) 3x - 4 – 6x + 2 2) -2x – 8 + 6x + 5 3) -7y + 8 – 6y - 13

Ex 4: Simplify. Simplify the expression. 1) 4(n + 9) – 3(2 + n) 2) 6(x + 3) – 2(8 + x) 3) 5(6 + n) – 2(n – 2)

Ex 5: Application Problem 1) Your daily workout plan involves a total of 50 minutes of running and swimming. You burn 15 calories per minute when running and 9 calories per minute when swimming. Let r be the number of minutes that you run. Find the number of calories you burn in your 50 minute workout if your run for 20 minutes.

Summary Question How do you use the distributive property to simplify expressions?
