Introduction to Matter (IC Chapter 1). The total energy of the motion of all of the particles in an object. kinetic energy.
 Is the ability to cause changes in matter.  Energy can transform, or change, from one form into another.  Energy is never used up.
 Matter- Anything that occupies soace and has mass  Energy- the ability to do work  Elements- any of the building blocks of matter, oxygen, hydrogen,
ENERGY Two main types -- kinetic and potential. KINETIC ENERGY Energy of motion Increases as mass increases Increases as speed increases.

Properties of Matter What are living things made of? Are there special substances found in living things but not in nonliving material? Forms of matter.
Energy is said to be the ability to do work. That means the ability to make something happen. By “happen” it means to make things move or change condition.

Concepts of Matter and Energy Ashleigh Campbell August 23rd,2012

What is matter, anyway? Matter is essentially what makes up the universe. It’s classified as anything that has mass and takes up space. It can be in solid, liquid or gas form. When one form changes to another (ex. Ice melting or fermenting grapes for wine) these are called Chemical Changes Physical Changes don’t alter the nature or “makeup” of the substance

What about Energy? Although opposite of matter (is massless and takes up no amount of space) energy is what causes matter to move and grow. Kinetic energy is energy in motion Potential energy is inactive and stored ( it has the potential to move)

4 different types of energy Chemical- is stored in the bonds of chemical substances Electrical- results from the movement of charged particles Mechanical- directly involved with moving matter Radiant- travels in waves, (energy of the electromagnetic spectrum)
