Models & Science

Essential Questions What is a model? Why do we use models in science? What are the three types of models?

Models Scientific models are used to explain the natural world. A MODEL is something that represents or stands for a real object or event.

Models of Large Items EX. Scientists make models so they can study things that are very large, like the solar system.

Models of Small Items EX. Scientists also create models of things too small to be seen, such as a plant cell.

Types of Models Models can be… A Drawing A Scale Model A Diagram

Which of the answer choices has three distinct layers? More About Models… A teacher wants to use a model to demonstrate the three parts of Earth- the crust, mantle, and core. Which of the following would be best to use as a model? A. beach ball B. baseball C. peach D. banana Which of the answer choices has three distinct layers? C. A peach has the thin outer skin, the juicy inside, and the pit. Therefore, it is the best choice to use as a model of the layers of the Earth.

Models are not… Models are NEVER the real thing. Ex. A model of a skeleton might be the same size, shape, & color as a real skeleton. However, a model is made of plastic, not real bones.

Let’s Review D. Which statement about models is TRUE? A. Models are always the same size as what they represent. B. Models are always made of the same materials as what they represent. C. Models look exactly like what they represent. D. Models make it easier to study an object or event.

Let’s Review Which of these would be easier to learn about by studying a model that you can hold in your hand? A. a plant cell B. the growth of a bean plant C. the type of sand on a beach D. the temperature of a star A.

Let’s Review C. Which of these is NOT a model? A. a globe B. a diagram of a volcano C. a dinosaur bone D. a drawing of a fossilized bone C.

Let’s Review Which of the following models would be best to show the bones of a skeleton? A. a smaller model of the actual skeleton B. a scale drawing of a skeleton C. a drawing of a skeleton D. shelter A.
