Informational Update Virtual Desktop Strategy Joint Working Committee Meeting (Emerging Technologies & Instructional Technologies) IT Governance Executive Committee Update May 23, 2014 Meeting

Site Visit Information San Marcos Virtualized over 100 apps 5 Year investment approximately 240k One staff member fully dedicated Still maintaining physical PCs replacement on a 4 year plan Dominguez Hills Latest CSU to deploy a virtual lab of 160 thin clients Planning to replace all lab computers with VDI Chose to do full desktop virtualization Common perspective … Value is in providing student access to campus software anywhere from any device

Working Group Meeting With information available – members expressed an overall caution pending more information Interested in identifying specific applications that could be delivered in the environment Dean Kelly to ask for application recommendations from Deans meeting Student representatives to provide input on desired apps Key issue - limitations for graphic intensive computing Poll of members in attendance found that the majority were in favor of obtaining more information before deciding whether we should move forward General recognition that this is the future direction

Action Items for 2014/15 Compile list of possible applications from faculty and student input Validate licensing costs and compliance for lab software to determine what can be virtualized Investigate hardware costs especially for storage (cloud & onsite ) Existing VDI (2 year old) pilot environment needs to be moved to new storage & possibly rebuilt
