I) Africa and The White Man’s Burden Goals: Wealth, Power – British Superiority… why? Military Superiority and Shipping Tech Educational level - literacy Social Darwinism/Racism God and Faith: Missionary Work Ex. Cecil Rhodes Ex. Rudyard Kipling’s ode to the US/Phillipines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mikvj-BhtPE

B) Questionable Methods Berlin Conference 1884-85 – divided Africa among European powers w/o African Representation at the meeting. 2) Contracts – See “Contract with an African King” 3) Manipulation/Heresay: See Letter from Menelik II (Ethiopia)

II) India – The Jewel of the Crown Largest supplier of raw materials AND labor (300,000,000 people at slave wages!) Run by East India Company (corporate thugs) who wisely hired sepoys, or Indian soldiers…why? Opium trade surfaces with China for tea… Sepoy Rebellion – over gun cartridges made with beef/pork, sacred animals. Uprising lasts 1 year, but begins era of direct British rule… the Raj. Quote p794 Viceroy Slowly, nationalist movement takes hold during later 1800’s due to second-class status as citizens. Kohinoor Diamond (above – ironic?)

III) China - Resistance Opium trade (through India) caused great harm to the Chinese people over the first few decades of 1800’s. Leads to Opium War Qing Dynasty saw the addiction problem and since the Brits had no intention of stopping – war broke out. Quickly won by more advanced Brits. Gained Hong Kong Growing resentment leads to a massive peasant uprising in 1850’s-60’s (Taiping Rebellion) and in the disarray, other countries move in to establish Spheres of Influence. Open Door Policy (1899) established between US, China, and others to protect trade and prevent colonization. Still, Chinese Nationalists called Boxers would stage a Rebellion against foreign domination “Death to the foreign devils.” It too failed, but by then the Qing Dynasty saw the light and began to reform

IV) Japan Rocked out of isolationism and feudal system by appearance of Commodore Matthew Perry’s steam powered ships in 1853. Early “Handshake Deal” Out of fear/intimidation – they allow for trade, and others countries would follow. Tokugawa Shogunate (left) forced out by people tired of feudal system and perceived global weakness. Shogun/Daimyo power diminishes Mutsuhito (right) “restores” Emperor, but modernizes Japan - shipping, builds an empire, ruling for 45 years. Called the Meiji Era (1867-1912). Attacks China, Russia, occupies Korea. AKA: MEIJI RESTORATION

Decline of Feudalism = Meiji Restoration 1868 Now the Emperor what have real power
