Bell Work Don’t forget to copy down the questions or incorporate them into your answers. Use complete sentences. What was the best part of your winter break? What was the worst part?

Bell Work Copy down the following statement & respond whether you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree and explain why! The world and society are much better off with new inventions and machines designed to make life easier.

4 Corners Directions… Find the corner that matches your response (strongly agree, agree, strongly disagree or disagree) Take your bell work response with you Quickly go to the appropriate corner (each is labeled) Share with the group members in corner your response Everyone should participate Wait for the bell to ring as each group will share their responses (select one person per group to be your spokesperson)

The Industrial Revolution Industrial Revolution- switch to new manufacturing processes from 1760- 1840; included going from building things by hand to machine made, new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, improved efficiency of water power, the increasing use of steam power, the development of machine tools and the rise of the factory system. Today you’re going to learn about some of the inventions from the Industrial Revolution by exploring each station.

Bell Work Don’t forget to copy down the questions or incorporate them into your answers. Use complete sentences. What new invention or technology would you create if you had the opportunity and why?

Invention station directions …. Each station has a folder with information & images of each invention With your group read the information & determine what’s most important Take notes & draw images in the graphic organizer Be productive as you will only have 10 minutes with each portfolio If you’re done early, review your information When the bell rings, put all papers back in the portfolio as you will be switching portfolios

Bell Work Don’t forget to copy down the questions or incorporate them into your answers. Use complete sentences. 1. Which of the 8 inventions do you think has been the most important in history and why?

Learning Goals: Understand what factors made England the perfect location for industrialization. Understand how industrialization expanded in the 1800s.

Inventions Review New technologies can revolutionize the way people live, work, interact and govern. Example: steam engines powered new industry, people migrated to expanding cities to find jobs.

Industrial Revolution in Great Britain Why did the Industrial Rev. begin in Great Britain in the 1780’s? Contributing Factors include: 1. Improved farming methods – more food produced, more farmland, new crops i.e. potatoes, more ppl could eat at lower prices & with less labor

2. With more food, population increased -Gov’t passes enclosure movement- forcing peasants to move to town for work (plenty of labor)

3. Britain had ready supply of money 3. Britain had ready supply of money -This money was spent on new industrial machines -Business owners looked for more ways to make profits

4. Britain had plenty of natural resources 4. Britain had plenty of natural resources -Many rivers gave water power to steam engines -Landscape rich in coal and iron (important for manufacturing)

5. Britain had a free society 5. Britain had a free society -Gov’t did not heavily regulate the economy -Ideas circulated freely including: inventors & capitalist

-Supply & demand (increase in population = more shoppers = 6. Britain already had market as part of its empire -British ships could transport finished goods anywhere in the world -At home: market also growing with population -Supply & demand (increase in population = more shoppers = more demand for products = more business owners looking for ways to profit)

Other factors: Changes in Cotton Production: Coal and iron: -Britain- leading in production of cotton goods Coal and iron: -Steam engine ran on coal -Coal industry expanded Railroads -They moved goods -Building led to new jobs for farm laborers & peasants -Cheaper transportation New Factories -Created a new labor system

Spread of Industrialization Britain- world’s greatest industrial nation Industrial Rev. spread to other countries at different speeds (depending on their resources, labor, and gov’t policies) Belgium, France, Germany-built canals & railroads Japan (only Asian country to follow Western technology) U.S.- went from farming to factory workers, population grows, and cities expand

1807, U.S. has first paddle-wheel steamboat- the Clermont The railroad- most important transportation system It turned the U.S. into massive market Factory workers- came from farms, most were women or whole families U.S. only 2nd to Britain to industrialize

Expectations… Stay on topic Voice level: 1 conversation Participate with your group members Stay in your seats at all times Be productive & review notes, if done early

Bell Work Don’t forget to copy down the questions or incorporate them into your answers. Use complete sentences. Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in Great Britain? What was the importance of coal, iron, cotton production and railroads in the expansion of the factories?

Bell Work What social impacts did the industrial revolution create in Europe? What did socialists oppose?

Bell Work Based on your readings what do you know so far about the working conditions of workers in the factories during the industrial revolution? If you were a child during this time how would your life be like?
