When thinking of a new invention it is important that you try to imagine a solution to a problem for example something that causes people problems my nan says she hates having to reach down for her stick she could do with some sort of machine to rest it next to her another idea that I had was some sort of multi-weather coat it could automatically get thicker that way it could be used all year round.

Punctuation added When thinking of a new invention, it is important that you try to imagine a solution to a problem. For example, something that causes people problems. My Nan says she hates having to reach down for her stick. She could do with some sort of machine to rest it next to her. Another idea that I had was some sort of multi-weather coat. It could automatically get thicker: that way it could be used all year round.

Writing your speech Why is using punctuation important? Is it necessary to have a strong opening statement that tells your audience your position on your issue? What kinds of words and phrases can we use to make a strong opening statement?

Are commas important? http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/guides/zqsyvcw/video Commas signal to your reader to pause very slightly while reading. This can help make the individual parts of a sentence clearer in meaning. It also shows how sentences are split up, and separates words in a list.

Task: Speech planning: drama and misdirection I’m going to talk to you today about security in our school. School security is an important issue we must talk about. Tobacco. Alcohol. Guns. Criminal items seized in a search of a year 9 student at St Philip Howard Catholic High School. Drama. Pauses. Emotive. Repetition. Misdirection (don’t immediately associate these items with school, audience then surprised)

SPEECH: WILF Remember to use at least 3 techniques from the following: Rhetorical questions (?) Power of three (three powerful repetitions of same idea) Alliteration (first letter repeats) Emotive language (powerful nouns, precise verbs) An anecdote: ‘a little story’ Facts, figures and statistics Expert opinion: ‘according to…’ Direct address to the reader: ‘imagine if you were cold, scared and hungry…’ Some counter argument: ‘I appreciate the opposing view which suggests…but…’ Use coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to join ideas within and between paragraphs: but, however, furthermore, in addition, in conclusion…’ Introduction (100 words) Write a convincing opening statement that tells the reader your opinion of the topic e.g I believe that… Paragraph 1 (150 words) Your first main argument/point Paragraph 2 (150 words) Your second main argument/point Paragraph 3 (150 words) Your third main argument/point Paragraph 4 (150 words) Your fourth main argument/point Conclusion (100 words) A summary of your main ideas
