Piecewise – defined functions Made up of different functions – use your parent functions paper to help you identify the pieces – described as linear and non- linear(curves) They have restricted domains for each piece for example In general linear functions in the y = mx + b form have a domain Of ALL REAL NUMBERS – however in this piecewise defined Function that is comprised of 2 linear functions( and a cubic function of 2 parabolas their domain have been restricted 𝑦 = 𝑥 where x < -2 and 𝑦 = 1/3𝑥 + 7/3 where x > 2 Both open circle so only < or > . There are intervals where the function is increasing /decreasing The function can be discrete (not connected ) or continuous (all connected) Written by giving the function followed by the restricted domain
