CREATING AN IMPACT SmashUp! was launched in Sept 2013 with an initial target deliver in 500 schools. 18 months forward we are delivering in over 1500 venues with 1200 delivering weekly activity, a trained workforce of Activators and were shortlisted as a finalist for the best sports project in the National Lottery Awards

SMASHUP! IN ACTION

CHANGING PERCEPTIONS Breaking the boundaries & challenging the rules Changing the look & feel Music playing as a backdrop to activity Putting players in control of how and when they enjoy their court time When developing SmashUp! we worked closely with StreetGames to ensure we understood what it was our target market wanted from a sports offer and how this should be delivered. We looked at how badminton had been perceived previously and decided to rip up the rule book and challenge ourselves to push the boundaries and create a current and appealing offer. SmashUp! changes the look and feel of court by incorporating bright colour and creating a relaxed and informal environment to play in through the use of music as a back drop. Built around originally 16 games, that put the players in control of how they play the games, when they play them and for how long. The Activator in the session is not there to coach but to facilitate the sessions supporting creativity and challenging the young people to think outside the box.

The most loved component of my sessions is when the children are allowed to put in their own music requests each week.” Sam Moore, Activator Together with Street Games, we have developed a training package that has challenged our traditional workforce education methods: Guided discovery eLearning modules Short workshop Focus on ‘how to’ & interpersonal skills

Activator: Adaptable and responsive Approachable and friendly A good communicator and listener A role model that is inspiring, engaging and motivational Enthusiastic and passionate Fun, relaxed and welcoming “In my opinion the programme has provided a fantastic new way for coaches like me to engage children into the sport with the different resources available and to get them passionate about playing the sport. The most loved component of my sessions is when the children are allowed to put in their own music requests each week.” Sam Moore, Activator “The Activator role is pivotal to the SmashUp! programme creating a specially trained workforce to deliver high energy and engaging session. The role requires the Activator to facilitate SmashUp! sessions utilising the game cards and equipment provided to deliver fun, innovative, safe, participant led sessions that make the young people want to come back week after week.” Neil Cottrill, Head of Coaching - Badminton England

STREET GAMES PILOT 269 sessions were delivered; providing 356 hours of SmashUp! activity 1,272 participants have been engaged in the Badminton Pop-Up Clubs to date 109 coaches and volunteers received SmashUp! Activator or coach training throughout the programme 501 participants have been guided to ongoing badminton participation, either by signposting to local clubs, or by the DSC now offering badminton as part of their regular programme. “Badminton England has totally committed to understanding our insight into what young people in disadvantaged communities are looking for in an engaging sports offer. The innovative joint product development & training offer has had an instant impact for organisations in the StreetGames network. We are really excited about growing the reach of SmashUp! in local communities together!” Justyn Price, Director of Sport & Workforce To further test SmashUp! within the market we continued to work with StreetGames and piloted SmashUp! within the Door Step Club network last year and had a really positive response. We tweaked the kit bags to provide the DSC with the essential items to get their sessions running and StreetGames provided coaches and volunteers with Activator training in order to support the delivery. The relationship we have built with StreetGames has been invaluable to us in terms of growing our programme within the community, providing a relevant offer outside of the school setting. We continue to work closely with the team at StreetGames to grow SmashUp! within it’s network.

SUPPORTING GENERATION Z Listened to StreetGames insight when developing programme Provides a vibrant and varied offer Social opportunity appealing to girls as well as informal activity Redeveloped Leadership Programme SmashUp! is utilising partnerships with HE and FE institutes in order to support the up-skilling of students to deliver the programme in local schools. Task!.............. Create a new game for SmashUp! for a target audience that is skint, stressed and have a lot on their plate! When designing your game think about the SmashUp! values and challenge your own rule books!
