Welcome to [insert course title] [Insert your name] February 2012

About me Born and raised in (insert) Graduated with my Bachelor’s degree from (insert University and location) Graduated with my Master’s degree from (insert University and location) Graduated with my PhD/EdD from (insert University and location) Any details you wish to share about your personal life (i.e. married? Kids? Hobbies? Insert a relevant picture About me

My education ups and downs Add point based on prompt questions below: In University, what was your favourite undergraduate/graduate level course and why? In University, did you struggle at all with the transition from highschool? If yes, how did you cope? If you ever “failed” or made a mistake, can you highlight how you learned and grew from this? If you had a professor that really helped you academically or personally, what did they do? How did it make a difference? My education ups and downs

Why am I the instructor for this course? Add points based on prompt questions below: What’s your background research, passion? How did you come to be teaching this class? Are you excited about teaching this class? Is it your first time teaching this class or is this a class you often/always teach? Is it a required class for your students? Or optional? Will this impact your capacity to be creative? Are there limits around what you have to teach and when? Why am I the instructor for this course?

What has worked well for you as a student? Ask the class to share stories of a favourite class or instructor. Get them to highlight the details- what was it about the class? What stood out about the instructor? Think of a class where you felt really prepared to do well- aside from your own study habits, what about the class itself made you confident? (i.e. very clear syllabus? Had options around my own assessment? Felt supported by my instructor and/or TA? Lots of practice questions/quiz prep etc.? What has worked well for you as a student?

What makes your role as a student harder than it needs to be? Ideas: What are some challenges you might have faced as a student at SFU? I might not be able to fix them, but knowing where challenges exist, I can do my best to let upper management know, and make amendments to my class if possible. For instance, if the class is 3 hours, would you prefer a 10-15 min break in the middle or a shorter break and an earlier exit? If there’s a bunch of students coming from the other side of campus, should I wait until the break to give important updates so you don’t miss them if you’re 5 minutes late? Etc. Within reason, what are some accommodations I can support you with. What makes your role as a student harder than it needs to be?

What you can do for me Use (class name) in the subject of emails Use (sfu email, WebCT/CANVAS) to contact me Please email your TA for any questions related to the following: Example: Please email me using the online LMS only or SFU email address only etc. I can receive up to 300 emails per day and I teach 5 classes. When you email me, please put the class info in the subject line (i.e. HSCI 210-question about exam) Please email your TA for any questions related to the following: Initial assignment grade revisions (I will not review until my TA has reviewed) What you can do for me

I use WebCT/CANVAS and promise to update this platform with any urgent news about class cancellations, exam locations etc. I will do my best to respond to emails within ___ hours I will hold office hours at ______ Before exams, I will hold skype office hours to help with last minute questions Other ideas: “I will not use double negatives on multiple choice exams” What I will do for you
