Concurrent Alternative Practicum 2017-2018

Why An Alternative Placement? Opportunity to integrate teaching skills and content knowledge in a non-traditional teaching environment Opportunity to understand new avenues for applying your developing skills as teachers Allows you to explore an area of interest not available through a regular placement

Finding a Placement: Criteria Consist of 120 hours (January 2-February 2, 2018) Include teaching/learning component Completed in Ontario Unpaid Have not worked or volunteered in the past Site supervisor not immediate family member Not to be completed in publicly funded school board Can complete in outdoor education, treatment facilities, Section 23 operated by publicly funded school board

Where Can I Complete My Placement? Detention Centers Hospitals Museums, Art Galleries Community Tutoring Services Library Literacy Programs Montessori Centres Outdoor Education Centres CAS ESL See extended list on website

Finding a Placement Students are responsible for finding their own alternative practicum. Take a look at the Placement Opportunity List on the website (will be updated by end of January) Make a list of possible organizations of interest Research organizations in the geographical area of interest Be as direct as possible when finding a placement. Phone calls and in-person meetings work better than email communication only.

Next Steps: Start thinking about what you wish to achieve/experience during your alternative placement Complete Alternative Practicum Interest form and bring to Friday, March 17, 2017 class Get calling! Don’t wait! Get a placement! Submit Placement Information form by Friday, October 20, 2017
