Corstorphine Primary School Curriculum Evening September 2017

Purpose of this Meeting Primary 7 2017-18 Purpose of this Meeting To provide: A curriculum overview for the year Information on ways you can support your child at home

Language - Writing The genres we are covering this year are : Cold Pieces for Assessment Persuasive /Discursive Personal Account Reports Poetry Letter News Articles Transition Writing

Language - Writing Process Stimulus - event, picture, music, topic Model for writing (VCOP) Planning - graphic, flowchart, mind map, oral, prompt sheets - class, group, individual. Writing

Writing Assessment Writing is assessed using a variety of techniques. We use success criteria related to the genre-shared with pupils in advance. Then teachers, pupils and peers work together to assess the writing during and after the process. Teachers provide written assessment in the form of 2 stars and a wish for each finished piece of work.

Language - Spelling/Handwriting Patterns/rules/high Words from Personal Dictionaries Active Learning approaches Homework - see homework task every week which will include aspects of grammar and punctuation Handwriting – continuing to encourage cursive script and presentation skills (underlining, bold script, capital letters in titles etc.)

Reading Only 3 reading groups in each class 3 reading sessions per week of 45 minutes Reading for fluency, comprehension, reading aloud and with expression, prediction and word meanings Looking at the author’s craft and encouraging higher order thinking through Bloom’s question stems Discussions to enhance and extend children’s vocabulary Pupils with additional support needs will continue to have their individual needs met and be included in group work.

Reading -continued Follow up activities based on the text and higher order thinking skills. Practising punctuation, grammar and spelling. Greater emphasis on active, collaborative learning, where the pupils work in pairs, trios or groups. Core reading books STAY IN SCHOOL!

Maths Numbers to 1,000,000 and beyond ! Add/subtract/multiply/divide Co-ordinates in 4 quadrants Measurement ( length,weight, volume ) Structure of lesson

Maths Homework One task per week How you can support your child: Regularly practise multiplication tables, number bonds etc. Challenges every Friday ! Use Maths in real life contexts eg. Money, time, weight etc. Play games involving Maths skills Let us know at an early stage if your child is concerned about their Maths

Social Subjects and Science TERM 1: Scottish Parliament Human Eye TERM 2:Malawi /Scotland Rock Cycle TERM 3: World War II Fossil Fuels/Green TERM 4: Keeping Myself Safe/P7Show Chemical Reactions ( Reversible /Irreversible ) How you can support your child Drawing your child’s attention to relevant events in the media, discussing issues and supporting any homework activities whether research or investigation.

Expressive Arts Music - increasing confidence in aural skills and basic composition with music specialist Drama - exploring various forms of expression often in context of social subjects. Art - working with a variety of media and styles, linked to other curriculum areas Dance - Scottish country dancing, creative dance
