Who was Hitler?

Photograph courtesy of the Imperial War Museum, London. The Munich Putsch In 1923, Hitler helped organise the Munich Putsch – an attempt to seize control of Munich. The attempt failed dismally. Hitler was arrested for treason and thrown into prison. However, in the long run the whole affair actually helped to strengthen his position! Photograph courtesy of the Imperial War Museum, London. The photograph shows Hitler and other National Socialists after their release from prison in 1924. Hitler is on the far left, Hess is second from the right. His trial gave publicity to the Nazi movement. He reviewed and altered his political philosophy.

The Events of the Beer Hall Putsch Crisis of Ruhr occupation leads to Article 48 being used to appoint Gustav Stresemann as Chancellor Meanwhile on the 8th November 1923 a meeting was called in a Munich Beer Hall to discuss government policy During this meeting, Adolf Hitler burst in and fired a shot into the air to announce that a revolution had begun He then tried to convince the leaders of the state government to set up a alternative government and march onto Berlin to seize control of the country The State government leaders tricked Hitler into believing they were on his side when in reality they were slipping away to warn Berlin there was trouble ahead Thus, when Hitler marched into Munich the next day the police were well armed and prepared and easily the Putsch down

What Happened Next? Hitler initially escaped but was caught two days later and was put on trial Yet the punishment handed out was as lenient as the Kapp Putsch General Ludendorff was acquitted while Hitler received a 5 year (he only served 9 months) sentence During this time he was able to write what would later become the Nazi Manifesto – Mein Kampf (My Struggle)
