Dada We, who are non-artists, will create non-art - since art (and everything else in the world) has no meaning, anyway.

What is Dada A movement that happened primarily in Europe (Zurich) between 1916-22. Response to the horror and meaninglessness of 1st world war. Dada is a French word for hobbyhorse. Dada artists created works of poetry, visual art, theatre, graphic design. Laid the foundations for surrealism, Post modernism, Pop-Art.

Kurt Schwitters Kurt Schwitters was an artist who was very influenced by Dada philosophy, but he remained in Berlin. Worked primarily with Type and collage

Task 1 - Making a poem To make a Dadaist poem: Take a newspaper. Take a pair of scissors. Choose an article as long as you are planning to make your poem. Cut out the article.Then cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them in a bag. Shake it gently. Then take out the scraps one after the other in the order in which they left the bag. Copy conscientiously. The poem will be like you. And here you are a writer, infinitely original and endowed with a sensibility that is charming though beyond the understanding of the vulgar.

Search for any imagery related to the article. cut the article into individual words, placing them in a box. Pick the words one by one, writing down what the result is. This is your Dada poem. Using Illustrator, write out your poem, using different fonts for each word. Experiment with font size – get a good variety of styles and sizes. Print your poems, and any imagery.

Making a collage Using the Dada poem type, any found images, newspaper, tracing paper, photographs, and any media you think is suitable in the Art room, you will be making a collage. The title of your collage must be related to the topic of the article. You should look at all the artists mentioned in the PPT to help inspire you.
