Principles of Art Balance Movement Rhythm Contrast Emphasis Pattern Unity/Harmony
Balance The arrangement of the elements to create stability Symmetrical (formal): work is equal in both sides. Asymmetrical: One side is heavier. Both sides are not equal. Radial: Balanced from a center point.
Movement The arrangement of parts in an artwork to create a sense of motion to the viewers eye.
Rhythm The repetition of visual movement-colors, shapes, or lines. Movements and rhythm work together to create the visual equivalent of a musical beat.
Contrast The differences in values, textures, shapes, and other elements. Contrasts create visual excitements and add interest to the work.
Emphasis When one element attracts more attention than any other element. Also called the focal point.
Pattern/Repetition The Repetition of an element. A design being repeated.
