Composition The term used to describe the arrangement of the visual elements in an art work. It is how the elements of art and design (line, shape, color, value, space, form and texture) are organized or composed according to the principles of art and design to give the art work structure and convey the intent of the artist. Symmetrically balanced composition Asymmetrically balanced composition

The Principles of Design Arrangement of the foundational parts of an artwork (arrangement of the elements)

BALANCE The equal distribution of visual weight in a design. Creates stability in an artwork. Alexander Calder

1. Symmetrical Balance The parts of an image are organized so that one side mirrors the other. by Smileus

2. Asymmetrical Balance When one side of a composition does not reflect the design of the other. by Photobank gallery

3. Radial Balance Radial balance occurs when all the elements radiate out from a central point and the visual weight is distributed equally.

What kind of balance?

What kind of balance?

EMPHASIS The focal point of an image, or when one thing is stressed above others. Typically the most important. Uses contrast (differences in size, color, value, etc.) to make objects stand out. Jim Dine Gustav Klimt

Where is the emphasis?

Contrast Contrast refers to differences in Values, Colors, or other Art Elements

What creates the contrast in this image?

RHYTHM RHYTHM RHYTHM RHYTHM RHYTHM RHYTHM Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. Marcel Duchamp

Vincent VanGogh

Movement The visual flow of your artwork. It’s the path that you intend your viewer’s eye to Follow.

PATTERNS Patterns are groups of elements or motifs that repeat in a predictable manner.

PROPORTION/scale Proportion in art stands for the relation based on size between parts or objects within a composition. Proportion is one of the principles of art and design that organizes and arranges their structural element , together with balance, unity, rhythm, and emphasis.

UNITY/Harmony When all the elements work together to support the design as a whole. Gives a feeling of completeness. Usually by using repetition and sameness.
