READ the experiment first before proceeding. Don’t copy other students. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, don’t make up your own lab. Work together in your lab groups. Be a team. Absolutely NO FOOD OR DRINK. When in doubt, ask the teacher!

When needing to smell something, DON’T SNORT! WAFT, instead!

Clean Up Clean up as you go. PROPERLY dispose of materials. Your lab instructions will guide you. Clean up and wipe down your work area (table and floor), wash and dry any equipment (beakers, flasks, etc.), tuck in your chairs. Leave the lab as you found it. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!

Liquids usually can go down the drain unless it is a specific chemical that needs to go in a special bucket. The teacher will tell you what to do. NEVER PUT A CHEMICAL BACK INTO IT’S ORIGINAL CONTAINER. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHERE TO DISPOSE OF MATERIALS. WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK!

Don’t even think about it! And under no circumstance should you put strange foreign objects down the drains such as pens or pencils. You wouldn’t do that at home so why would you do it at school???? Use common sense when doing a lab. Don’t even think about it!

First Aid Chemical spills: Small amount, non-toxic chemicals – rinse in sink with clear, cold water, at least two minutes Splash in the eyes – eye wash BIG spills, toxic chemicals – safety shower Burns: Run under cold water, teacher will get ice. Cuts: Rinse with plain water and apply pressure. Always let the teacher know!!!

HOT STUFF A hot beaker always looks like a cold beaker. Have at least one person that supervises the burner or hot plate. Keep your face to the side of the container. Never look into a container that is being heated. Use clamps or hot pads.
