Aprons and gloves if strong, toxic chemicals are being used What to wear Tie back long hair No baggy clothing Aprons and gloves if strong, toxic chemicals are being used No dangling jewelry

Incorrect Correct

READ the experiment first before proceeding. Don’t copy other students. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, don’t make up your own lab. Work together in your lab groups. Be a team. Absolutely NO FOOD OR DRINK. When in doubt, ask the teacher!

Lab partners are there to help! Reading is a good thing! Lab partners are there to help!

When needing to smell something, DON’T SNORT! WAFT, instead!

Clean Up Clean up as you go. PROPERLY dispose of materials. Your lab instructions will guide you. Clean up and wipe down your work area (table and floor), wash and dry any equipment (beakers, flasks, etc.), tuck in your chairs. Leave the lab as you found it. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!

Liquids usually can go down the drain unless it is a specific chemical that needs to go in a special bucket. The teacher will tell you what to do. NEVER PUT A CHEMICAL BACK INTO IT’S ORIGINAL CONTAINER. ALWAYS BE AWARE OF WHERE TO DISPOSE OF MATERIALS. WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK!

Solid materials can go into the trash unless otherwise specified Solid materials can go into the trash unless otherwise specified. PLEASE DO NOT PUT THEM DOWN THE DRAIN!! WRONG RIGHT

Don’t even think about it! And under no circumstance should you put strange foreign objects down the drains such as pens or pencils. You wouldn’t do that at home so why would you do it at school???? Use common sense when doing a lab. Don’t even think about it!

Leave the lab the way you found it!

Tell the teacher even for little things First Aid Tell the teacher even for little things

First Aid Chemical spills: Small amount, non-toxic chemicals – rinse in sink with clear, cold water, at least two minutes Splash in the eyes – eye wash BIG spills, toxic chemicals – safety shower Burns: Run under cold water, teacher will get ice. Cuts: Rinse with plain water and apply pressure. Always let the teacher know!!!

HOT STUFF A hot beaker always looks like a cold beaker. Have at least one person that supervises the burner or hot plate. Keep your face to the side of the container. Never look into a container that is being heated. Use clamps or hot pads.

If YOU catch on fire: STOP, DROP, AND ROLL If someone else catches fire: use the fire blanket Only a teacher should use the FIRE EXTINGUISHER

CHEMICALS REVIEW Follow directions Touch or smell only when instructed. You will never taste any chemical. Waft, don’t snort. Take only what you need. Dispose of the extra, not back in bottle. Measure carefully. Follow directions on clean-up

And now . . . a pop quiz 1. What should you do if you get a small amount of chemical splashed on your arm? 2. If you are pretty sure what will happen, can you mix together two powders that you have left over from your experiment? 3. True or False: You always clean up by putting things in the trash. 4. When should you wear goggles?

7. What are the safety shower and the eye wash used for? 5. You catch your sleeve on fire and it spreads to the rest of your clothes. What should you do? 6. What should you do if it’s your friend that catches fire in question #5? 7. What are the safety shower and the eye wash used for?

3. False. Only when the directions say to do that. ANSWERS 1. Rinse with cold, clear water for at least 2 minutes and tell the teacher. 2. NO! 3. False. Only when the directions say to do that. 4. When the procedure directs and then as long as you have chemicals or flame at the table. 5. Stop, drop, and roll. 6. Get the fire blanket and tell the teacher. They will use the fire extinguisher. 7. Safety shower: big toxic chemical spills on a person. Eye wash: splash of chemical in eyes.
