Friendship & Peer Pressure S1 Learner Journey

Lesson Aim To recognise the difference between good and bad friendship Starter: Draw a quick picture of what a good friend would look like. You can annotate your drawing.

Qualities Task 1 – Watch this clip first Harvey and Rabbit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20UhjXpFX_c What qualities are important in deciding whether someone is a friend or not? See if you can list 5 qualities Relay Race Now line up in boys and girls facing the board. You have 90 seconds to write as many qualities on the board as possible, one at a time. Pass the whiteboard marker to the next person when you are done and go to the back of the line.

Friendship Task 2 In pairs, decide what the term ‘friendship’ means. Write down your own definition for it.

Check your definition… Friendship: the mutual feelings of trust and affection and the behaviour that typify relationships between friends

Friendship Task 3 What qualities make a bad friend? See if you can list 5 things. Relay Race Now line up in boys and girls facing the board. You have 90 seconds to write as many qualities on the board as possible, one at a time. Pass the whiteboard marker to the next person when you are done and go to the back of the line.

Friendship Task 4 Think about your best friend… What makes this friend better than others? Would you be willing to do anything your best friend asked? If no, why not?

Peer Pressure Task 5 Copy the definition Peer Pressure: social pressure by members of one's peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise change in order to be accepted.

Peer Pressure Task 6 What things might a friend ask you to do that may go against your belief or values? In what ways might friends pressure you to do things? How could you get out of doing something you didn’t want to do without causing offence? Can Peer Pressure be a good thing?

Task 7 What different types of friendship are there? See if you can think of 3

Your Mission… Everyone should have friends. Your mission is to befriend a pupil in the school in the next week who you are not already friends with. That person could be someone who is in need of a friendly face. The impact you could have on someone else could be huge and make them feel really good!
