Divisions East and West After appt. of Patriarch East & West Christians began to split Many Christians in the east rejected the patriarch claim of authority over all Christians.

Divisions East and West The clergy and priest in Western Europe did not marry, while they did so in Eastern Europe. Western Christians spoke Latin and celebrated Christmas holiest holiday. The Christians in the East spoke Greek and celebrated Easter as the main holiday.

This is known as the schism or great split. The final dispute that separated the East and West was a dispute over icons. The Western Christians worshipped icons of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and other saints. The emperor outlawed icons, setting off violent battles within the empire. This is known as the schism or great split.
