Hereditary Carrier Screening

What is Carrier Screening? Genes provide instructions for the body to grow, function, and repair itself. Sometimes mutations in these genes, if inherited by a child, can cause genetic disease and can significantly impact their health and well- being. Learning about an individual’s genes can help make decisions about one’s family’s health. For each of the 129 conditions on this carrier test, a patient will be identified as either: Carrier - indicating an increased risk Non-Carrier - indicating a significantly decreased risk. Carriers usually do not have any symptoms and may not have any family history of the condition they carry, making screening important for everyone. Emphasize preparation – family planning Others areas of interest - egg/sperm donation & adoption

What is Carrier Screening? Why Get Tested? – I’m thinking of having a child I’m considering freezing my eggs I’m currently pregnant I’m interested in my carrier status Carrier testing results help determine the risk of having a child with a genetic disease Carrier screening looks for mutations, or changes, in both partner’s genes that together can increase the risk to having a child with genetic disease.
