A store with a healthy mission Whole Foods A store with a healthy mission

What is "whole food"? Whole foods are unprocessed and unrefined foods.  Usually they do not contain added ingredients such as sugar, salt or fats.   Examples of whole foods: Unpolished grains Beans Fruits and vegetables Whole food is not the same as organic food.

What is an ANDI score? Aggregate Nutrient Density Index: A score given to whole foods that contain the most nutrients per calorie. It is argued that a nutrient dense diet can prevent or even reverse diseases and might also reverse obesity.

ANDI SCORES

What is Fair Trade? Fair trade is paying a decent price to farmers and producers from developing nations. Fair trade protects the environment. Fair trade builds communities and gives people the power to change their own lives.

Whole Planet Foundation Whole Planet Foundation's mission is to get rid of poverty through microcredit in communities worldwide that supply Whole Foods Market stores with products. Microcredit = small loans, money that will be paid back with interest, given to self-employed poor.

"Microcredit ignites the tiny economic engines of the rejected underclass of society. Once a large number of tiny engines start working, the stage can be set for bigger things." -Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of Bangladesh's Grameen Bank

Genetically Modified Organisms GMOs

How widespread are GMOs in our food? You might be surprised to learn that 86% of corn and 93% of soybeans grown in the United States is genetically modified.  In fact, according to California’s Department of Food and Agriculture, 70% of processed foods in American supermarkets now contain genetically engineered (GE) ingredients.

How can you avoid GMOs? The best way to avoid GMOs is to choose organic.  By law, organic products must be made and produced without the use of genetic engineering.
