Do Now Act III Journal Entry Respond to one of the prompts in the space provided. You may also reflect on your reading of the play. What did you like or dislike about it? Do you think it has a valuable lesson, and if so, what is it?

Research Paper Stage 1 Creating themes from motifs For example: Motif = recurring idea or concept Theme = author’s message regarding that idea of concept For example: MOTIF = LOVE THEME = Love makes typically rational individuals act irrationally. A theme must be a complete thought or THE MEssage

Stage 1 Packet In pairs, create three potential themes, or messages, based off of motifs. See the possible motifs list for ideas. We will review and discuss these as a class, changing some wording around where necessary. CLASS THEMES:

Stage 1 Packet Now, select one theme that we have created as a class. Jot it down on the top of next page (Quotation Worksheet). Your next step is to locate four pieces of textual evidence (quotes) from Raisin. Just like in your thematic analysis essays you’ve been doing all year, think of four examples of that theme from the text. Write the direct quote with page number in the middle column (even though it says Summarize Quote, you will copy it down directly here). Then, take a few notes on how it helps demonstrate your theme.

Stage 1 Once you have your theme and four quotes, you will move on to the second part of Stage 1. Create a thesis statement that includes your theme plus four examples (we will review how to do this next class), and then, create a quote sandwich for each piece of textual evidence you found (context, quote with citation, analysis). *See sample All of this info., all of these instructions, and copies of all handouts can be found on my teacher page in the Research Paper folder.

Homework Work on Stage 1 initial packet: Theme & 2 quotes from Raisin with page numbers Notes on how each quote helps to “prove” your theme I will be conferencing with each of you next class to check in and make sure your theme is workable. Then you will go on to create quote sandwiches for each piece of evidence you found. *STAGE 1 WILL BE GRADED.
