Writing Addition Number Sentences Lesson 1-1 CCSS 2.OA.1 Literature Link: Jack the Builder by Stuart Murphy

Warm Up Find the sum. 2 + 5 3 + 3 3 + 6 4 + 4

Think and Write When do you have to add in your daily life? Share some examples.

Addition When we add, we have two or more groups of things. Each group is called a part. When you bring the parts together, they add up to make a whole, called the sum. + =

Addition Number Sentences Addition sentences show the parts and the whole. Example: What number sentence would we write for this picture? _____ + _____ = ______

Number Sentence Practice Write and solve the addition number sentence shown by this picture. + =

Problem 1 Write and solve the addition number sentence shown by this picture. + =

Problem 2 Write and solve the addition number sentence shown by this picture. + =

Problem 3 Write and solve the addition number sentence shown by this picture. + =

Challenge! Write and solve the addition number sentence shown by this picture. + + =

Draw a Picture! Now, it’s your turn to draw! Draw a picture to show the following number sentences. 4 + 2 6 + 4 3 + 7 5 + 4

Stories about joining Lesson 1-2 CCSS 2.OA.1 Literature Link: Math for All Seasons by Greg Tang Stories about joining Lesson 1-2 CCSS 2.OA.1

Warm up Draw a picture to represent this addition sentence. 6 + 5

Think and write Write a story about a time where you added two things together.

Stories about joining When we add, we join things together. Today we will learn what to do when we hear or see a story about joining. Here is one example: Frankie sees 6 red birds in his garden. Then 2 more birds fly into the garden. How many birds are there in all? Which words tell you that you should add? Write a number sentence, then solve.

Problem 1 Draw a picture to find the sum. Then write an addition sentence. Sarah is at the pond. She sees 7 ducks swimming. Then 5 more ducks join them. How many ducks does Sarah see in all?

Problem 2 Draw a picture to find the sum. Then write an addition sentence. Kelly has 7 pennies. Mikayla has 8 pennies. How many pennies do both girls have in all? *Challenge: How much money do the girls have altogether?

Problem 3 Draw a picture to find the sum. Then write an addition sentence. Jared has 9 racecars. Luis has 7 racecars. How many racecars do the boys have in all?

Problem 4 Carolyn eats 8 strawberries. Malia eats 9 strawberries. How many strawberries do the girls eat in all?

Your turn! Write a joining story about the picture.

More practice! Write a joining story about the picture.

Writing subtraction number sentences Lesson 1-3 CCSS 2.OA.1 Literature Link: Monster Musical Chairs by Stuart Murphy

Warm up Write an addition number story for this addition sentence. 7 + 8 = 15

Think and write When have you used subtraction? List some times you have had to subtract.

Subtraction vocabulary To subtract means to find the missing part, also known as the difference. When you subtract, you use a minus sign, which looks like this: - Here is an example of a subtraction sentence: 6 – 3 = 3

Subtraction number sentences Subtraction sentences show the whole and one part. The missing part is called the difference. Example: What number sentence would we write for this picture? Write it and solve. _____ – _____ = ______

Problem 1 _____ – _____ = ______ Write and solve the subtraction number sentence shown by this picture. _____ – _____ = ______

Problem 2 _____ – _____ = ______ Write and solve the subtraction number sentence shown by this picture. _____ – _____ = ______

Problem 3 _____ – _____ = ______ Write and solve the subtraction number sentence shown by this picture. _____ – _____ = ______

Problem 4 _____ – _____ = ______ Write and solve the subtraction number sentence shown by this picture. _____ – _____ = ______

Now, it’s your turn to draw Now, it’s your turn to draw! Draw a picture to show the following number sentences. 10 – 4 11 – 6 8 – 3 9 – 7

Stories about separating Literature Link: Adding and Subtracting at the Lake by Amy Rauen Lesson 1-4 CCSS 2.OA.1

Warm Up Solve the following subtraction sentences. 11– 3 10 – 8 12 – 4 15 - 9

Think and Write Describe a time when you had to use subtraction.

Stories about Subtraction When we subtract, we separate one part from the whole to find the difference. Today we will learn what to do when we hear or see a story about subtracting. Here is one example: Greg has 15 baseballs. He shares 7 with his friend. How many baseballs does Greg have left? Which words tell you that you should subtract? Write a number sentence, then solve.

Problem 1 Draw a picture to find the difference. Then write an subtraction sentence. Tara has 12 golf balls. She gives 8 to her friend. How many golf balls does Tara have now?

Problem 2 Draw a picture to find the difference. Then write an subtraction sentence. Khalil puts away 17 basketballs on two racks. He puts 9 basketballs on the first rack. How many basketballs does he put on the second rack?

Problem 3 Draw a picture to find the difference. Then write an subtraction sentence. Kylie brings 13 soccer balls to the soccer field. She shares 8 balls with her friends. How many soccer balls does Kylie have left?

Problem 4 Draw a picture to find the difference. Then write an subtraction sentence. Sean has 11 hockey sticks. He puts 9 of them on the bench. How many hockey sticks does Sean have now?

Problem 5 Draw a picture to find the difference. Then write an subtraction sentence. Gavin carries 14 footballs in a bag. He puts 6 footballs on the field. How many footballs does Gavin have left in the bag?

Your Turn! Create a number story for these subtraction sentences. 12 – 3 7 – 5 11 – 7 14 – 9

Stories About Comparing Literature Link: Teeth, Tails and Tentacles: An Animal Counting Book by Chris Wormell Lesson 1-5 CCSS 2.OA.1

Warm Up Solve these number sentences. 4 + 8 7 + 9 14 – 6 15 – 7 8 + 2

Think and Write Use the word “more” in a sentence about two numbers.

Vocabulary Compare means to look at two (or more) numbers to see which is larger/smaller and find the difference between the numbers. When we say something is more, we mean that it has the greater number. When we say it has fewer items, it is the smaller number and has less items. Which is more, 68 or 73? Which is less, 54 or 59?

Example There are 11 gray kittens and 7 black kittens at the pet store. How many more gray kittens are there than black kittens? * Write a subtraction sentence for this problem. 11- 7 * How can you use a picture to find the answer?

Problem 1 The pet store has 14 brown hamsters and 5 white hamsters. How many fewer white hamsters are there than brown hamsters? Write a subtraction sentence and solve.

Problem 2 In the bird cage, there are 16 blue parakeets and 9 white parakeets. How many more blue parakeets are there than yellow parakeets? Write a subtraction sentence and solve.

Problem 3 In the fish tank, there are 12 black catfish and 3 spotted catfish. How many more black catfish are there than spotted catfish? Write a subtraction sentence and solve.

Problem 4 Tracy bought 13 goldfish for her tank. Her little brother Matt bought 4 goldfish. How many fewer goldfish did Matt get than Tracy? Write a subtraction sentence and solve.

Problem 5 Tank 1 has 17 guppies. Tank 2 has 8 guppies. How many guppies are in Tank 2? Write a subtraction sentence and solve.

Now it’s your turn! Write a subtraction number story that compares amounts of two things, or two numbers. Remember to use the words “How many more ___ are there than ___?” or “How many fewer ___ are there than ___?” 15 – 6 13 – 7

Connecting Addition and Subtraction Lesson 1-6 CCSS 2.OA.1, 2.NBT.5 Literature Link: Math Fables Too (read 1-2 pages of problems) by Greg Tang (will be used in other topics as well- I highly recommend this book).

Warm Up Write a subtraction number story for this fact. 14 – 9 = 5

Think and Write How can you use addition to help you subtract?

Addition and Subtraction Addition and subtraction are related. You can use addition facts to help you subtract, and you can use subtraction facts to help you add. That’s because these facts form a fact family! They are related because they have the same numbers. A fact family is a set of three numbers that are all related because two parts add up to equal the whole, and you can break the whole into those two parts.

Fact Families Here is an example of a fact family: 2 + 5 = 7 5 + 2 = 7 2 + 5 = 7 5 + 2 = 7 7 – 2 = 5 7 – 5 = 2 Here is the start of a fact family. Can you complete it? 3 + 6 = 9 9 - 3 = 6

Fact Family Practice! Write two related addition sentences for the picture. Now, write two related subtraction sentences.

Problem 1 Write two related addition sentences and two related subtraction sentences for the picture.

Problem 2 Write two related addition sentences and two related subtraction sentences for the picture.

Problem 3 Write two related addition sentences and two related subtraction sentences for the picture.

Problem 4 Write two related addition sentences and two related subtraction sentences for the picture.

Problem 5 Which number sentence represents this story? Stacy has 12 markers. She buys 5 more. How many markers does Stacy have now? 12 – 5 = 7 C. 17 – 5 = 12 12 + 5 = 17 D. 17 – 12 = 5

Problem 6 Draw a picture to solve the problem. Then write the related number sentences for the fact family. Mrs. Lopez has 8 chairs in her classroom. The custodian brings her 9 more chairs. How many chairs does Mrs. Lopez have in her classroom now?

Problem Solving: Use objects Literature Link: Click Count Splash A Counting Adventure by Doreen Cronin Problem Solving: Use objects Lesson 1-7 CCSS 2.OA.1

Warm up Write the fact family for this set of numbers. 5, 3, and 8

Think and write How do you figure out when to add and when to subtract? Share your strategies.

When to add Add when you know two parts and have to find a whole. Key Words for Adding: In all Total Increased by Altogether Plus Sum Combined Together Added to

When to subtract Subtract when you know the whole and you are looking for one missing part, or when you are comparing two groups. Key Words for Subtraction: Difference How many/much more Remain Less than More than Take away Minus How many fewer Decreased by Dropped Greater than Have left

Practice! Look at these number stories. Use key words to help you decide whether to add or subtract. Riley picks 18 strawberries. She eats 9 of them. How many strawberries does she have left? Mekhi has $7. He earns $5 more by helping his mom in the garden. How much money does Mekhi have now? Mrs. Gemino plants 7 flowers in the morning. She plants 8 more flowers in the afternoon. How many flowers does she plant altogether? Sean picks 12 apples. Gavin picks 7 apples. How many fewer apples did Gavin pick than Sean?

Problem 1 Christian has 6 watermelons and 5 honeydew melons. How many melons does he have in all? Do you add or subtract? How do you know? Write a number sentence and solve.

Problem 2 Kaya picks 9 ears of corn. Her brother Trey picks 4 fewer ears than Kaya. How many ears of corn did Trey pick? Do you add or subtract? How do you know? Write a number sentence and solve.

Problem 3 Pumpkin A weighs 16 pounds. Pumpkin B weighs 7 pounds. How many more pounds does Pumpkin A weigh compared to Pumpkin B? Do you add or subtract? How do you know? Write a number sentence and solve.

Problem 4 Mrs. Sanchez picked 8 pounds of tomatoes. After her children ate some tomatoes, the total weight dropped to 6 pounds. How many pounds of tomatoes did her children eat? Do you add or subtract? How do you know? Write a number sentence and solve.

Challenge Write an addition number story using addition key words. Then, write a number sentence and solve. Write an subtraction number story using subtraction key words. Then, write a number sentence and solve.
