Strengthen the fight against maternal and infant mortality In the AB Mayor Mme Marie BWABE THOME , Cameroun Dr Jean Népomucène GAHUNGU, Burundi Dr Macédoine NIJIMBERE, Burundi Dr Pierre Claver KAZIHISE, Burundi

Contexte AB Mayor records, like the rest of the country, A high rate of maternal and infant mortality causing human suffering and significant economic losses. A policy taking into account the living conditions of the population may change this situation and raise the Mayor as a social model of development and well-being in the country.

The health sector united approach implementation has not achieved the expected results. Indeed, with its implementation, a partial improvement was observed. And auditing of death showed that most occurred among illiterate or uneducated families, and low socioeconomic level.

Key recommandations for action - To educate population: literacy, training for careers) - To Establish income-generating activities, employment - To improve sanitation of the environment (decent housing, Environmental sanitation)

Key stakeholders and strategies for negotiations Ministry of Education Ministry of Environment Ministry of Finances Ministry Social affairs and gender NGOs, Civil society Ministry of Foreign affairs Putting together the partners and discuss the problem of mortality of women and children to agree on the objectives, actions to be taken and allocate roles and tasks as well as the timetable of activities

Approaches to intersectoral arguments Over 700 women / 100,000 die in childbirth and more than 150 children / 10.000 births do not celebrate their fifth year . This situation is largely observed in households living in slums, who have not had access to education, which have a low income and do not have access to care This state causes considerable losses on the local and national economy

There is need to let local communities to make decisions at their level. In this way, they can set themselves the problems they face The reduction in maternal and infant mortality will save important shares at the state budget

Strengths and weaknesses Governmental program Involvement of different partners Weaknesses: Lack of finance Lack of qualified human resources

Decision taken To train qualified human resources especially midwives Raise awareness for childbirth in health facilities Increase the number of health care facilities
