What are my options? You are expected to stay in education until you are 18 years old. When you leave Wildern at 16 there are a range of options available to you… Subjects A levels and other subject-based qualifications like International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge Pre-U. These are good if there are subjects you like and want to study further, or if you are planning to go to university. You normally need to have at least five GCSEs at grades A* to C (or an equivalent qualification) and may need at least a grade B in any specific subjects you want to study. Work and Job Related Courses: NVQs, BTECs, TechBacs and Cambridge Technicals are good qualifications to take if you want to combine hands on, practical learning with studying subjects and technical skills. They are specialist courses which relate to particular jobs, sectors, or subject areas. Depending on what qualifications you take, you can go on to further education, training, or employment, or you can go to university. Before we do this, how do you think they got there? Train Driver Social Worker Dentist For this part of the lesson you will be using the Talking Jobs website. You will need to select the original module (http://www.talkingjobs.net/modules/original). On the website there are interviews with people in a variety of roles and in the Learning Questions they talk about their training and what they had to do to get their job. Before showing students the clips get them to speculate as to how they think they got there – did they go to university, how long did it take them to train? Then show the interviews. Take feedback from students – did anything surprise them? Did any of it sound interesting/appealing? Why/why not? If you have time students could select other jobs from the list to explore. Before you have your lesson write in your planner 5 jobs you want to investigate.
