Presentation transcript:

E.g. What are the exams like in French? How did you get on? Last lesson you were asked to find out answers to three questions you had about the pathways process and subject choices. Instead of saying you are here during the register, say one thing you have found out over the last 2 weeks. E.g. Which subjects are good for people who want to join the public services such as the police? E.g. How much time will I need to spend on controlled assessments in Resistant Materials? E.g. What are the exams like in French? Last lesson students were asked to write 3 questions about pathways or subject choices that they wanted to find out. Take feedback on this – instead of saying they are here during the register ask them to tell you one thing they have found out over the last two weeks. Check whether students have any other pathways questions before moving on.

Careers Learning Objective: To begin exploring options for life after Wildern. I can explore my options when I leave school. I can give examples of the training involved in different job roles. I can prepare for my U-Explore Lesson.

What are my options? You are expected to stay in education until you are 18 years old. When you leave Wildern at 16 there are a range of options available to you… Subjects A levels and other subject-based qualifications like International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge Pre-U. These are good if there are subjects you like and want to study further, or if you are planning to go to university. You normally need to have at least five GCSEs at grades A* to C (or an equivalent qualification) and may need at least a grade B in any specific subjects you want to study. Work and Job Related Courses: NVQs, BTECs, TechBacs and Cambridge Technicals are good qualifications to take if you want to combine hands on, practical learning with studying subjects and technical skills. They are specialist courses which relate to particular jobs, sectors, or subject areas. Depending on what qualifications you take, you can go on to further education, training, or employment, or you can go to university. Explain the different options that students have after leaving Wildern at 16. Make sure students know there are a range of options available to them. Show the clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EeuuNW0tj4 https://www.ucas.com/ucas/16-18-choices/getting-started/what-are-my-options You can also choose to train while you work by taking on an apprenticeship, traineeship or supported internship.  For example: Apprenticeship: You work for an employer and train to do a specific job at the same time. There are over 280 types of apprenticeship for over 1,500 job roles – anything from engineering to boat-building, or veterinary nursing to accountancy.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EeuuNW0tj4

What are my options? Imagine someone has asked you what options there are after leaving Wildern at 16. What would you say to them? Before moving on get students to review their learning and ask them to imagine someone has asked them what options there are after leaving Wildern – what would they say to them?

How did they get there? Train Driver Social Worker Dentist Barrister We are going to explore how 5 different people trained and got to the roles they are in today. Before we do this, how do you think they got there? Train Driver Social Worker Dentist For this part of the lesson you will be using the Talking Jobs website. You will need to select the original module (http://www.talkingjobs.net/modules/original). On the website there are interviews with people in a variety of roles and in the Learning Questions they talk about their training and what they had to do to get their job. Before showing students the clips get them to speculate as to how they think they got there – did they go to university, how long did it take them to train? Then show the interviews. Take feedback from students – did anything surprise them? Did any of it sound interesting/appealing? Why/why not? If you have time students could select other jobs from the list to explore. Barrister Graphic Designer http://www.talkingjobs.net/modules/original

What is their job like? Train Driver Social Worker Dentist Barrister Now think about their working lives. What do you think they like about their work? What might they dislike? What are the challenges? Train Driver Social Worker Dentist If you have time you can also think about what these people like or dislike about their jobs. Then show the interviews using the questions on ‘Work’. Barrister Graphic Designer http://www.talkingjobs.net/modules/original

Careers Learning Objective: To begin exploring options for life after Wildern. I can explore my options when I leave school. I can give examples of the training involved in different job roles. I can prepare for my U-Explore Lesson.

Get ready for U-Explore? During this unit you will have an opportunity to go on the U-Explore website which is a fantastic way of finding out about different career options. Before you have your lesson write in your planner 5 jobs you want to investigate. Here is a list of possible jobs to get you thinking: Photographer Fitness Trainer Nurse Electrician Plumber Web Developer Social Media Manger Events Planner Lawyer Judge Funeral Director Flight Attendant Pilot Armed Forces Doctor Dentist/hygienist Computer Programmer Chef Pharmasist Physical Therapist Police Officer Retail Sales Vet Writer Roofer Secretary Security Guard Therapist Manicurist Hairdresser Interior Designer Firefighter Architect Marketing Manager Graphic Designer Buyer Accountant Financial Advisor Estate Agent Optician Air Traffic Controller Mechanic Sales Chiropractor Students will have a U-Explore lesson in this unit. You will either need to book a computer room or laptops for this lesson. Before students have this lesson it is important they have already started thinking about what careers they might want to find out about. Ask them to write down 5 ideas in their planners. There is a list of possible jobs on the PPT to give them some inspiration if they are stuck.
