This guide will demonstrate how to search for case law using the party names.

First, Identify the Party Names Zelman v. Simmons-Harris, 536 U.S. 639 (2002) The citation for a court decision will usually be similar to the above. It includes the parties to the case, the source of publication listing the volume, abbreviation of source and page number for the case (year of decision).

From the library homepage, select “Databases.”

Scroll down the alphabetical list of databases and select Lexis-Nexis Academic

On the Lexis Nexis Academic home page, enter the party name or names in the Look up a Legal Case boxes, then click Go.

The first result will usually be the most recent decision by the highest court to hear the case . However, check the court issuing the decision and the date against the other results. Select the party names to reach the text of the decision plus summaries and notes added by Lexis Nexis.
